The Red Bank Register reports a severe storm tore off the Wagon-house roof of Mr. Adam Marsellus near Colts Neck and dropped it intact in a swamp. Commissioners decide a special election on Tuesday Feb 21 to approve a tax for buying a hand-brake engine and for town fire protection.
The Matawan Journal reports considerable sickness locally with Dr J H Bartlett gravely ill from pneumonia. Governor McClellan signed the commission of Dr Wilmer Hodgson of Ke port as Surgeon of the Third Regiment with Major rank. A reader presents a copper coin found in Mr H Holbrook's garden, an Irish halfpenny dated 1737 showing the harp and Hibernia on one side and Georgius II Rex on the other.
Jacob Herbert completed two surf boats ordered by the Government for Life Saving Stations Nos. 24 and 15. The craftsman is noted for building the best boat in the country and remains busy with government work. Rumor says H H Yard will start a large steam mill at Ocean Beach this spring and may renew efforts to take marble from the sea at Wreck Pond.
