Adjutant General Oliphant issued orders for National Guard recruitment and examination. Minimum height five feet four inches, cavalry up to five feet ten inches, weight standards vary by branch with exceptions for chest measurements and mobility. Examinations by recruiting and medical officers. minor variances allowed for health and desirability.
Wesley Engine Company's ball committee met to organize for the event electing John H. Bennett as chairman Charles H Ward secretary and Harry A Borden treasurer. Sub committees were named for Printing Supper Decorations Lighting and Music with members listed. The ball is scheduled for Wednesday April 10 in the beach auditorium.
Ice harvest gains pace as butchers ice cream dealers hotels and ice companies leverage cold weather. Thomas J Winckler fills his houses with eight inch ice and Fred Kurrus plans large harvests. Hill expects 260 tons, and United Ice Companies of Asbury Park targets over 11000 tons in Jamesburg.
William C. Ely announces 22 new horses bringing total winter stock to 64 at Holmdel stables. The lot includes matched teams a fast trotter and road horses led by a well broke bay road horse unafraid of autos or trolleys. Also listed are dipple gray pairs sorrel mares and five year old well fed mules weighing 2400 pounds. Autograph cards offered separately with engraving services.
By April first the Steinbach Company plans a large expansion. The old Pawley building, bought by Theodore Beringer, is being prepared for occupancy. The second floor will house carpets and mattings, the third floor a stock room, with tailoring, millinery, and cloak displays moving to newly freed spaces. The shoe department will nearly double in size with a postless, full-length expansion.
Community items list library hours and events tonight including Wheelmen minstrel rehearsal and St. Paul M E church board meeting. Notices mention persons such as Township Collector William Giffard with mumps and J Albert Tisrantaet traveling to New York for a relative's death. A skating incident on Wesley lake, a public library fund game, and a hospital operation in Manasquan are noted along with hotel renovations and monogram stationery offerings.
In Freehold Judge Helsley ruled for Mrs. Nancy I. Pettingill executrix in Henry Steinbach versus Pettingill. The case sought $300 and interest over a Grand and Cookman avenue plot claim. Steinbach may appeal to the Supreme Court.
Secret societies including Pride of Park Council No 15 and Twin City Council No 48 meet at 8 o clock in various halls. The fifty fifth anniversary of Arnames Lodge No 37 was celebrated last night in Gloucester City. Royal Arcanum installation planned in Winckler Hall. Rising Sun Lodge of Camden plans a temple on Seisban Avenue after winning a chancery suit. Simonides Court of Ben Hur led degree work in Long Branch for Tirzah Court Eatontown candidates, followed by a banquet.
The first meeting in the newly furnished quarters was held last evening. Members thanked furnishing committee LeRoy Scott and Millar for comfortable rooms. Several hundred dollars in bills were paid. A brass sliding pole to the second story was to be installed in a few days.
Mrs John N Sutphen of Farmingdale died yesterday at her daughter Mrs Frank R Casner's Avon home after a breakfast healthy morning. She leaves a husband and three children William Sutphen a New York real estate agent Isaac Sutphen of Farmingdale and the funeral will be held Saturday at noon from the Farmingdale Methodist Church. The Tenney House fire damage is repaired with a new story adding fifteen rooms under Architect Clarence Smith supervision.
The Long Branch Auxiliary of Monmouth Memorial Hospital staged a major charity ball at the Long Branch Lyceum drawing attendees from Red Bank Freehold Sea Bright and West Long Branch Asbury Park participants named Miss Elizabeth IIII Miss Ada E King and others traveled by trolley returning at 4 AM Prof Pitman West provided high quality music A large charity banner decorated the hall about 300 guests attended and the auxiliary fund grew by several hundred dollars with tickets priced at 3 dollars.
The Oreos defeated the Washingtons of Newark 24 to 8 in a one sided contest. After a 15 to 4 halftime lead they eased up, while Washingtons famed for beating Newark’s Institute failed to threaten. Oreos next face Alliance of Harlem on Saturday.
At the weekly progressive euchre in the Hotel Marlborough last night eight tables were filled by thirty two players. Miss Simpson won the ladies first prize a silver hat brush and Miss Florence Frisby the second a gold hat pin. Mr Brooch of Lakewood took the gentlemen first prize a card case and Harold Sexton the second a pearl handle penknife. Refreshments were served by Mrs M B Sexton the proprietor.
Alterations underway on Cookman avenue to add new departments and broaden offerings. Store will focus more on women's wear with plans for men’s apparel and an active trade campaign this spring.
Harry Joste in charge of machinery at Asbury Park Building and Supply Company had four fingers cut yesterday morning when his hand slipped into a revolving machine. The accident occurred as the whirling knives tore into his digits. Doctors report no serious injury expected.
Company K invites Company H of this city to Long Branch on Washington's Birthday for a friendly shooting contest. The Long Branch pier will be converted into a range with shots fired toward the sea as a committee from Long Branch plans to meet Company H to arrange the event.
