Local fight over a proposed electric street railway between Asbury Park and Belmar dominates township meetings. The Seashore Electric Railway completes a spur on Main Street prompting tensions with the Seashore line and freeholders who threaten injunctions to block track placement over county culverts.
The Asbury Park Pioneer Association hosted its third annual banquet at Hotel Vendome with about one hundred members and guests. George L. Atkins presided, a short program followed by business remarks, letters of regret read from notable members, a memorial for Mrs. Ripley, and supper at ten. Grand Avenue Hotel chosen for next meeting.
President James H. Bird of the Board of Trade names standing committees for the year including Finance with G F Kroehl H C Winsor G F Wilbur and others, Manufactures with M L Bamman Henry Stein mat John A Githens and more, Railroads with John A Githens James H Shep herd N E Buchanan and others, and Publications Finance Legislation and Public Improvements among others.
Messrs Burtis and Zimmerman of Freehold rent the upper floor of Burtis's music store on Matin street and plan to open a bicycle repository around April 1. They will stock Victor and Raleigh bicycles, and Zimmerman will train for summer and fall races, including a month in Asbury Park to use the Athletic Association track.
Long Branch Commissioners hear a petition by the West End and Long Branch Railway Company for a 90 year franchise to operate on Second avenue with capital stock of 1 million dollars. The group promises a thorough ventilated decision process. Also notes veteran businessman Beverly Crowell’s return to Asbury Park and resumption of Matson avenue trade. Local notices urge stock stationery reorders and Asbury Park Printing House. Mention Gamewell fire alarm adoption and a quip about past alarms. Weathered notes from Long Island produce and Southern track farms describe January snows and upcoming Bermuda onions and potatoes.
A survey of residents and visitors features Isaac Kennedy ill with a cold, Mrs Gee H Brown visiting from Highland NY, and W L Brown’s marriage amid a North Long ranch link. Updates cover postal office leadership, theatre manager Charles McCarty leasing a cottage, $250 from Junior Order to Mrs J Longstreet, hires in Philadelphia and Jersey City figures, travel to Florida, and local business and church notes with Rev Handley and Rev Scudder plans.
In consultation with an architect a reliable school-building expert met with the trustees and citizens on Saturday morning. He inspected the school and gave rough cost estimates for a new building an addition to the front and remodeling of the present structure. Plans will be submitted in a few weeks. The committee will resume discussions at the annual school meeting in March.
Repairs at Charles Schwager & Co. will make the People's Store among the best in Asbury Park. The shoe department moves to the front occupying most of the west half, while the clothing section stays in its place. The extra space will be appreciated by Schwager's large customer base.
A notice invites farmers and supporters to subscribe to Farm Journal for 50 cents a year. It promises practical concise content for all regions and offers a one year trial for 1898 with free Sarople on request to Farm Journal Philadelphia.
Carlyle W. Harris gains another court respite as resentencing is moved to next week. Recorder Smyth adjourns for prosecution affidavits refuting defense claims of Mrs. Potts daughter’s morphine habit. Howe to serve DA Nicoll with any extra affidavits by Thursday.
The Asbury Park Electric Light and Power Company plans a June plant upgrade to supply Asbury Park Belmar and Spring Lake with electricity. Directors vote to rename Neptune Electric Company and broaden business scope to supply light heat and power. A 1892 net profit of 7631.26 dollars equals about 13 percent of capital stock.
George McKeown's unoccupied cottage at 302 Third Avenue suffered heavy fire damage last Friday night. Firemen from Asbury Park Ocean Grove West Park and West Grove extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes after discovery at 9 40. Insurance of 2500 on the building and 500 on the furniture, both with companies represented by T Frank Appleby, was adjusted on Monday.
The Avebury Park Wheelmen plan their regular monthly meeting next Monday night The discussion focuses on incorporating the club and a possible reincorporation of Asbury Park The group argues that reincorporation under the 1891 law would divert extra borough funds to street improvements in the town
Police began the borough census last week dividing the town into four districts. Jacob Borden covered from Wesley Lake to Sewall avenue, William Rogers from Sewall avenue to Fourth avenue, Charles E. Kipp from Fourth avenue to Sunset, and George White from Sunset to Eighth. A final report will be filed with the Borough after completion.
Neptune Engine Company hosted a Wednesday night supper for its members and invited guests. The lower floor was cleared of fire apparatus with two long tables laden with oyster stews real oysters sandwiches cake and coffee.
The Christian Endeavor Society of the First Presbyterian Church marked the twelfth anniversary of the National Society with a program titled Christian Endeavor Around the World. Messages from Japan and other fields, plus music and a $3.42 mission collection, highlighted the evening.
Willard Wiseman and John Bennett of Wesley Engine Company circulated a petition this week asking the Board of Commissioners to reinstate Charles Sherman as Wesley engine engineer. Sherman was asked to resign two weeks ago amid charges the Fire and Water Committee presented. The petition, headed by the foreman and signed by a majority of Wesley Engine Company members, will be presented next Monday night. The Fire and Water Committee decided Monday not to transfer Daniel VanArsdale to Wesley for now. Sherman stated at the January 23 Commissioners meeting that he would not reconsider his resignation under any condition.
The second annual Charity Ball at the new Town Hall Long Branch drew upwards of 150 couples and many Long Branch elites. Supper was served at Castle Hall across the street while Malchow's six piece orchestra played. A party from Asbury Park attended, with members including Mr and Mrs John Bennett and Miss Sadie Borden among others who traveled by train.
Mendelssohn Union announces a Tuesday February 28 charity entertainment for the poor in Anbury Park area. Leader Mr L van Gillane invites all singers to meet with the Union next Tuesday night to finalize arrangements.
The fourth week of the New Jersey Legislature saw many bills introduced and passed. Governor Werts blocked a partisan measure targeting Mayor Wanser of Jersey City. race-track bills face opposition and likely abandonment amid Law and Order Leagues.
The Edison phonograph with amplifier, praised in Asbury Park, will be shown again next Monday at Westminster Church. Mr Edison's voice will be reproduced from cylinders along with other selections making the event worth 20 cents admission.
August Wybaum of Seabright was sent to the asylum after wandering into the ocean with a bat. He was rescued and found to be out of his mind with no clear explanation for his actions. Wybaum had previously been confined but escaped by joining a funeral procession off the grounds.
