Flagstaff Public Schools will seek external help to revise district educational philosophy including racial and ethnic balance. Board acts to hire a consultant or firm for a comprehensive study while ongoing debates over balance policy continue.
WINDOW ROCK Ariz AP Indian leaders from several states accused the federal government of ignoring their push for greater self determination and a louder role in policy and appointments. Peter MacDonald and others urged Interior Secretary Morton to meet directly with tribal leaders as criticism of the Bureau of Indian Affairs escalated. A thin attendance at the National Tribal Chairmen Association meeting raised questions about leadership, while debates over William Veeder’s transfer and John Crow’s role sharpen tensions between tribes and Washington.
Scientists at Sloan Kettering Institute report isolating two virus-like particle forms in malignant cells from ten Hodgkin's disease patients. The find strengthens theories of viral roles in some cancers and raises speculation Hodgkin's could be contagious, though no definite virus or causation is established. Hodgkin's disease will claim about 3,700 American deaths and 4,900 new cases this year.
Ernst G Breitholtz president of Rotary International from Kalmar Sweden will address Rotarians and spouses from District 549 northern Arizona on Sept 20 at 730 PM in the Northern Arizona University Student Union ballroom. He tours the United States and will visit the Grand Canyon on Sept 1. Local host Flagstaff Rotary Club presides with Dr Peter Lindemann as president and Dr Carl Schrader and Dr Thomas Geiler as co chairs.
Mayor opens Rotary program at Greenlaw Village 2229 E 7th Ave urging Rotarians to turn good will into action. He cites 15000 clubs, 700000 members in 14 countries and likens good will to light through a prism, calling for a constructive year focused on service across schools, professions, business and world affairs.
Robert Spellman, 42, arraigned Wednesday in the Coconino Superior Court on a rape charge. He stood mute when asked for a plea and the judge entered an innocent plea. Bond set at $20,000. Spellman sought to dismiss his court appointed attorney and arrange for his own. A trial date of October 13 was set. He was arrested at his home on 125 E. Clay two days after the alleged incident.
A 16 year old Flagstaff girl suffered minor injuries and was cited for failure to yield after her motor bike collided with a car on North Paradise Road. Also injured were a 17 year old passenger and a Denise Way 16, with no extensive medical treatment required. Arizona Highways editor Raymond Carson retired after 33 years as Highway Director Jeana He said Carlson left for health and nearing his 65th birthday.
Continental Country Club and Estates near Flagstaff mark their grand opening with festivities this month. The project by Continental Homes, Inc. of Phoenix includes a remodeled clubhouse, reconditioned fairways, wooded home sites, and automatic country club membership for owners, with a master plan by Dwight Busby.
Harris reported extensive renovations at Northlands 6,220 yard course including reconstructed fairways greens a new putting green tee box driving range and a fully rebuilt pro shop with storage. A 40 cart storage building paved paths larger locker rooms and a glass walled clubhouse with a 300 seat restaurant lounge coffee shop and private banquet rooms were added along with a catering kitchen.
Three patients discharged Thursday include Priscilla Jaramillo Lu ar Magana and David McElyea per hospital notes.

Five Mexican states including Sinaloa and Tamaulipas plan a 3500 mile cross country railroad from Mazatlan to Matamoros to replace the canal system and spur regional development. The project envisions assembly industries along the route to boost the economy and job creation.
