In Flagstaff and nearby Northland communities 1521 was raised for muscular dystrophy relief during a Labor Day weekend telethon. Seven Mountain Bell volunteers handled pledges, 26 youths aided by collecting canisters, and additional donations came from Gene Fisher and Darrell Fasberg.
Weekend traffic boating and hunting accidents killed 18 in Arizona and seven in a Phoenix shooting. Labor Day weekend saw ten traffic deaths, six drownings and two hunting deaths. A Phoenix woman and family were shot to death at home. John Freeman, 41, of Scottsdale, charged. A five car crash near Tuba City killed six, including four of the Durango Calo family. Names include Tommy Begay, 31, and Michael Begay, 11. Other victims: Marvin Davis, Arline Davis, Raymond Cox, Richard Jimenez. Five drownings in the Colorado River. one youth drowning after head injury, another during a rescue attempt. Man Sentenced.
Tony Chavira, 27, was sentenced in Superior Court to 90 days in jail and a 300 fine for possession of marijuana. He was arrested July 31 after a Highway Patrolman stopped a car headed from the Los Lomas area, with two companions. Marijuana was found in the glove compartment. Chavira later surrendered a small amount. Edwin Chavez, 21, and Greg Castillo, 24, were initially charged but charges were dropped against them.
In Brannen Homes a woman and her son face aggravated assault and interfering with an officer charges after a Sunday clash with Flagstaff Police. Patrolmen Newell Lewis and James McCann were injured. Norene Reese 38 faces assault charges while her 2 year old Eddie is charged with interfering. Reese allegedly threatened neighbors with a straight razor, then attacked the officers. she was taken to Flagstaff Community Hospital.
Today the New York market posted solid gains as the Dow Jones average rose 7.23 to 919.58 at noon. NYSE winners outpaced losers by more than three to one, with many major issues showing gains and notable quotes across the list including AT&T and Ford.
Flagstaff police plan to file charges today against a city resident and his two sons after a late Monday disturbance in Bran nen Homes. Officers reported the trio were briefly held, then released by bystanders as neighbors helped and a police car key was stolen. The clash stemmed from a family dispute and escalated as residents gathered and suspects escaped with neighbor aid.
Two Fort Benton men Rocky Ray Tope and Larry J. Cook were sentenced to three months in jail for possession of marijuana. They pleaded guilty after police stopped them August 8 near Barker Village during a traffic check and found about two pounds of marijuana in the car. Judge Laurance Wren imposed six months total jail terms and $300 fines as part of one year probation for each, with the jail to begin from the arrest date.
For A Cause state of Arizona recorded $83,000 in donations, up from $75,000 the previous year. Coordinator Marjorie Osman received a canister from John Hesketh while Liz Hesketh accepted a pledge by phone. Calls came from Williams, Holbrook, Page, Tuba City, Cottonwood, and Prescott.
The body of Bruce Harold Goldberg, 52, of Greenlaw Mobil Estates, was found Saturday by his estranged wife. He had been frail and a bottle of whiskey was found nearby. Born May 12, 1919 in Joliet, Illinois, he moved to Flagstaff in 1964 from Phoenix and formerly managed the drugstore section of Babbitt Bros. Trading Co. in Flagstaff. Private funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at Flagstaff Mortuary.
