Nationwide Phone Strike Called by CLO Union

CHICAGO September 7 AP The CLO Association of Communication Equipment Workers set September 17 for a nationwide strike to cripple telephone service. Dan Harris Oregon vice president says 25 000 members in 2 200 Bell locations across 45 states will walk out over wages and working conditions with a demand for 16 cents an hour raise. Wages now range from 88 cents to 154 dollars an hour. The walkout would halt construction and installation of equipment but not maintenance and service.

Voters jam polling places in Arizona primary turnout

Aviona voters surged at 6 am as polls opened in Coconino and Santa Cruz and counties reported heavy lines. Factory Blast Kills 2 In West Side Candy Plant

A blast and fire in a two block long West Side candy factory in Chicago killed at least two people early today and injured twenty others. Authorities say five more may have died, as three blasts occurred around 4 10 am. The plant suffered extensive damage with flames reaching above the roof while investigators searched for more victims.

A horned toad from Tucson named Pima Pete owned by Patricia Ellis beat 12 rivals in a Chicago Railroad Fair Arizona Day event.
