Williams Arizona judge Thomas J. Way will retire after 35 years on the Coconino County bench and 34 years as city magistrate. A Republican, he recalls mixing humor with duty, once hosting a Pearl Harbor era tale and nearly officiating Franklin Roosevelt Jr’s wedding. He faced narcotics raids and a notable 1963 murder case, and authored Frontier Arizona in 1960. He plans a relaxed future and more writing.
Flagstaff City Council set for action on a proposed flat rate water fee increase starting July 1 with a further rise Jan 1 1977. The change would boost individual bills about 50 percent while high volume users rise less, funding a 33 million water works program.
Flagstaff joined nationwide Memorial Day observances with services at Citizens' Cemetery and Calvary Cemetery both starting at 10 a.m. Veterans groups led a salute at Citizens' and a Mass at Calvary conducted by Rev. Hichard. President Ford led ceremonies at Arlington as Taps echoed across hundreds of cemeteries while reporter Dieffenbach recalled his brother's World War II death.
Six people died in Arizona over Memorial Day weekend as two fatal crashes happened in the northern part of the state. James Wigley, 37, of Rosseville, died when his car veered into the opposite lane 21 miles west of Seligman. Driver Joe Smith, 42, also of Rosseville, was injured with a dislocated hip and head cuts. John Dorrell, 71, of Broken Arrow Oklahoma, suffered chest and hip injuries. In a separate crash near Lake Havasu City, Ronald Burrola, 22, of Buena Park California, died from massive internal injuries after his car left Highway 95 and hit a guard rail.
Nadine Chaval, Belgian ambassador's one year old daughter, was released by Jeflist guerrillas after a $408000 ransom. She said the four day kidnapping left her anxious but she feels fine now. She slept well and enjoyed a glass of milk as she recuperates near the embassy. The incident sparked warnings and a colder forecast in Mexico City.
