The Daily Sun reports Flagstaff's 1973 74 budget aims to rise to about 2 151 019 in the general fund with highway water and street expenditures up over the prior year. Officials expect $1 8 million in revenue sharing and a property valuation gain to help lower the municipal tax rate currently the highest in Arizona. The city projects needing 1 176 000 in property tax revenue, with most going to the general fund and 5 percent to the library fund. City Manager Leland C McPherson and Abeyta anticipate a near 37 million assessed valuation for 1973 74, up from about 34.32 million current.
Northern Arizona University plans to remove the course fee and set annual tuition at 330 dollars, aligning with state board policy. The measure follows a mid-range tuition landscape cited at 303 to 411 dollars and includes state capital improvement funding for projects at Flagstaff.
Severe storms across the Midwest and South killed at least 39 people and damaged thousands of homes. In CAMP VERDE Arizona a 13 year old boy Samuel Jesus Romero from 3109 N Patterson died after leaping into the Verde River to rescue his 7 year old sister Elena who wandered into a whirlpool. He and authorities tried mouth to mouth rescue but failed. The drowning occurred near Verde River and Oak Creek junction during Memorial Day weekend.
A California man, 4 years old in error, died on Interstate 40 near Playstar after swerving to avoid a dog. The wreck involved a semi driven by Stephen H. Briesmell of Sioux Falls and left Taylor’s vehicle flaming and against a guard rail. The wife, Spann, 44, injured, and the truck occupants treated.
