AP reports Southern Pacific’s transcontinental mainline opened after 12 cars carrying 500 pound bombs exploded near Benson Arizona. Investigators consider sabotage while SP backs up 24 trains. bombs headed for Fort Chiago California. Site described as Tully in the southeastern Arizona Desert where 12 of 10 loaded cars exploded, flames and debris widespread. SP and military officials say detectors noted wheel bearings and temperature. munitions trains were supposed to be locked and sealed.
Lt. Bud Jenkins district 2 commander announced a beefed up patrol plan for Memorial Day week. The department will cancel compensatory time, call out reserves, and seek help from Phoenix area officers with added helicopter and speed measuring devices. A Mexican alien identified as Raul Ramirez died when his vehicle collided with another on U S 80 about five miles east of Avondale, Arizona. The driver fled. five other passengers, all aliens, were hospitalized or treated. Teammates and witnesses reported by investigators.
AP reporting shows farmers loosened grip on the consumer dollar while middlemen captured a larger share. April’s market basket rose 1.6 percent to 1,480 dollars, the smallest gain since last December, with farmers earning 44.2 cents of every food dollar.
Flagstaff police investigate a burglary at the Arizona Daily SUN after $22 vanished from the office. Business manager Gary Kuhn reported the loss, initially suspecting a bookkeeping error. Investigation is being handled by the detective division.
In Berry Alabama officials concluded a rash and related symptoms among more than 80 pupils and teachers were a mass hysteria. State health officer Dr Richard Levine and psychiatrist Dr Inez Fowler found no real illness, saying psychosomatic chain reactions and suggestion caused the fake outbreak during May.
