Top young musicians in the Phoenix area congratulate Raymond Van Diest and peers. Misa Kron, honorable mention last year, is a Flagstaff High School junior. Miss Curry is an eighth grader at Most Flagstaff Junior High.
Flagstaff High School junior Virginia Kron won the senior division with a premiere performance of Macelevsky’s cello concerto. Cathy Curry, an eighth grader at East Flagstaff Junior High, captured the junior division with Mozart’s concerto No. 5 in A major. About 12 young musicians from Flagstaff schools entered, staged at Northern Arizona University’s Ashurst Music Hall, judged by Raymond Van Dest, Richard Philabaum, and Serge Hud.
Tori Howard Tiedemann flew as a test engineer and oversaw Hughes Aircraft operations including site acquisition. He met figures like Igor Sikorsky, joined the US Navy after Pearl Harbor, served as naval aviator aboard carriers Coral Sea Randolph Saratoga, retired in 1966 as captain in Washington DC, and later chaired local boards and led Fort Valley Antmes with wife Elsie.
Flagstaff City Treasurer Don ald E. Wilson, after resigning in April amid spending concerns, may be retained on a consulting basis to help prepare the 1972-72 fiscal year budget and assist with the annual city audit. City Manager Leland C. McPherson was authorized by the council to hire a consultant familiar with the citys books.
Late Tuesday a fire near Al's Bare pecue on Highway 89 north of the City Limits destroyed two mobile homes belonging to Lorraine Goodin and Bob James and damaged a third trailer. Fire Chief Don Vorhies said the third fire, at Tony Janis’s residence on North Main, may have been electrical. Janis said no appliances were on and he had not been smoking.
Flagstaff officials at a special meeting approved the latest Mt Elden Improvement District proposal and authorized 75000 more city funds to the project. The ordinance passed by a 2 vote margin and cannot take effect for 30 days, delaying final regulation and protests. Edits to curb and gutter costs were debated amid time constraints for a fall construction season.
The Snow Bowl could be owned and operated for public use via a county wide recreation district. Proponents say funds from assessments would start the purchase, with fees covering ongoing costs, and expansion to Peak area and other sites. Opponents note possible lawsuits and cost concerns. Public officials cite federal funds as a potential aid.
Wolf told the crowd the lakes rarely evaporate, and water could be available to Flagstaff today. He warned some area lakes run dangerously low and questioned the project’s feasibility while noting it avoids Federal dealings, unlike the Wil ns Dam plan. Mayor Harenberg joined in urging exploration.
Ray Austin of Carrollo said a feasibility study could finish within days from a start date. At an informal session the council accepted Chilson's proposal and McPherson was asked to direct Carrolla to begin the study. Early estimates place pumping and storage costs at 2.5 to 3 million dollars.
George Pryer Jr a 49 of 720 W Clay was re sentenced to the Arizona State Prison for the 1971 shooting death of Lilly Mack Johnson after an Arizona Supreme Court order for rearraignment. Pryer appeared before Judge J Thomas Brooks on a guilty plea to voluntary manslaughter in the 5 San Francisco street shooting. Attorneys appealed Pryer s Feb 22 1971 sentencing arguing the judge did not ascertain if the plea was knowingly voluntarily and intelligently. The state agreed transcripts showed the lack of such questioning. The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal after a new arraignment was agreed. Pryer was taken from prison where he served six to 10 years for the new arraignment. Judge Brooks imposed five to 10 years and Pryer was returned to prison.
Phoenix AP report says the state Welfare Board set a maximum of four dollars per day for child care provided by the state. The decision came after a crowded meeting with about 65 attendees and is more than two dollars below the rate urged by an ad hoc committee. Andy Williams of the Gila River Indian Community warned the plan could put his five centers, which care for about 200 children, out of business within six weeks.
Dr Beers announced Miss Berry is selected for the Outstanding Teens of America program which aims to recognize and encourage the achievements of today’s young people. They are seen as America’s leaders of tomorrow.
