Population Up 17 691 in County, Census Figures Show

Preliminary census figures released by the U S Census Bureau indicate Coconino County's population rose by 17 691 over the past decade. Board chair Harold Muffler noted the county total exceeded estimates by about 10 004 as four area communities also reported gains, including Page with 2 918 and Williams up 1 392 from 1950.

Soviet Move Expected Not Immediate in Downed Plane Case

BERLIN AP The Soviet embassy says no move will likely be made today or Tuesday regarding the U S Air Force plane downed in East Germany with Americans aboard. An embassy spokesman gave no details and would not confirm reports the jet was forced down by Soviet fighters. The C AT strayed into East Germany last Friday on a routine flight from Copenhagen to Hamburg.

Arizona State Annual Awards Assembly Highlights Scholarships

The Arizona State College awards assembly announced over 34200 in scholarships. The Hird Ower Award went to Mrs Joanne Hersinger Rohrer of Flagstaff for outstanding academic achievement. Sandra Wilson of Flagstaff and Dick Kaurlaric of Gallup were named President’s Award recipients. The Lowell Award honored the top graduating senior with highest GPA. Gold Axe Awards were given to 45 seniors for lifetime service to ASC. Vernon Gunekel was named Man of the Year by Associated Men Students. The Arizona Playmakers won the Blue Flame for their play Inherit the Wind. Mel Muffaker of Tempe received the 24th annual John G. Yost Jr. Award as outstanding lineman on the Lumberjack football team. The Joe Rolle trophy recognized continued athletic excellence.

President Eisenhower to address nation on summit collapse

AP report states President Eisenhower will speak to the nation on television and radio Wednesday evening about the summit conference collapse and U S aims with allies. White House press secretary indicated the 30 to 40 minute address begins at 8 pm EDT and will be carried by major networks ABC CBS and others. The briefing followed a White House meeting with Secretary of State Christian Herter after Eisenhower returned from Gettysburg Pennsylvania.

Pedestrian Killed by Car on East Santa Fe

A Tacareld Wagstaff resident and Santa Fe Railroad employee died Saturday afternoon after apparently stepping into the path of an eastbound car on East Santa Fe Avenue in Flagstaff. Witnesses said Jory Alvarado attempted to cross the street when struck by the Los Angeles driver. Alvarado suffered severe injuries and died en route to Flagstaff Hospital. The driver was questioned and later released pending applications of a sobriety test.

Administration OKs Funds For 2 Project Power Lines

WASHINGTON AP The administration today approved federal funds for two power lines in the Upper Colorado River Moraga Project area. A spokesman cautioned this does not commit to a national grid plan.
