SUCSON AP The Brizoia State Museam begins a crash excavation along a seven mile stretch across the Navajo Reservation amid a large interstate road project on Highway 86. Archaeologists aim to clear ruins as the Navajo oppose the plan until excavation completes. Dr Emil Hawy leads the museum effort with seven miles starting at the New Meier line and moving west. Officials say completion in 20 to 45 days. William Wasley leads the protest against the project.
Haydew vats completion of storage, transport and mulling facilities next year will allow Kennecott Copper Corp to raise annual copper production by 20,000 tons. Bay Mines Division reported 1958 output at 49,320 tons. Lewi The Jones, 70, of Phoenix, citrus grower and Methodist lay leader, died in a Phoenix hospital. Tucson School Board approved a 3 percent raise for the 1959-40 year, starting at 4,400 for new teachers with a bachelor’s degree and up to 7,700 for those with a master’s. Arizona father of the year Robert J. Mondy of Yuma was named by the Arizona Cowbelles to represent the state in the national Father of the Year contest. The legality of Dr. Charles Kalil’s appointment to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will be challenged in the Arizona Supreme Court.
The Flagstaff Post Office advertises job openings for clerk and carrier positions. Applications are being accepted and interested applicants may obtain information from the postmaster between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the nearby post office.
In Tucson AP report describes Civil Air Patrols desert search demonstration failing to find three men who drove 30 miles into southeast of Tasson. Sun reflectors and spaced planes aimed to speed rescues but yielded no sighting. CAP plans tighter gaps on Saturday as lessons are applied for faster recovery.
Winslow High School awarded a $2000 national scholarship to Dennis Weible among a long list of honors. Recipients included Camella Reacher Harriet Whelley and many others for academic athletic and special achievements with numerous school and university scholarships noted. The event also honored journalism awards and announced Lester Taylor as this year’s scholastic dedication.
Arizona parole board grants commutations and parole to Raymond Bayless former state accountant jailed since 1937 for embezzlement of 970 145 and Raymond Bayless father of ten children, among others. Also approved for Chaves Oplin 29 for murder involvement with Fibrot G. Riddell denied parole. Other candidates listed with sentences and counties including Maricopa Coconino Pima and Navajo.
