Tribal hearing jeers as Havasupai plan sparks clash

At a public hearing Park Service masters plan for Havasupai Reservation draws protests from tribal members led by Marshall who warns of a government ward future. He urges development of water grazing on Long Mesa and a tourist facility at Hualapai Hilltop to sustain the tribe and prevent displacement.

City Police Arrest Man On 3 Counts

A one year old transient is jailed on three counts of drunk and disorderly conduct indecent exposure and resisting an officer after an early morning arrest. Alexander Roach 40 of Downtowner Motel No 23 allegedly caused two incidents across the city. Patrolman Mullon found Roach at 1 19 a m at Santa Fe avenue and Leroux street with his zipper open and trousers down he was naked at the station and fought at the booking desk. Acting Sgt Madden Jr helped subdue him and he was placed in the jail violent cell. Earlier Patrolman Stevenson had been called to Park Plaza Motel about ten blocks away where a drunk disturbance in the lobby was observed and the man warned before leaving in a taxi

Evening With Bands at Coconino High School Gym

Six bands will perform in a public Evening With Bands program at Coconino High School Gym in Flagstaff. Bands include Flagstaff Junior High School Concert Band, FIHS Wind Ensemble, East Flagstaff Junior High School Junior Concert Band, EFJHS Concert Band, Coconino High School Band, and Flagstaff High School Band under directors Charles Bame, Wernard Curry, and Jerry Karn. Authorities report a 57 year old driver charged with driving while intoxicated after a pickup truck jumped a curb north of downtown. The arrest occurred Monday at 9:45 p.m. and the suspect, Hedtick C. Stinespring, was released on own recognizance pending court. The breathalyzer showed a 27. The arrest was filmed on the department's new video tape machine.

Gatewood Babbitt Motors Employee Appointed to ON EO Board

Henry D. Gatewood, superintendent of Chinle Public School District, named to the Office of Navajo Economic Opportunity board at a Fort Defiance meeting, succeeding George Gurns. Gatewood, a Navajo and former Chinle leader, has long served near the Navajo Reservation. Earl F. Hoot, longtime Babbitt Motors employee in customer relations, died in Flagstaff. He was born in 1915 in Windsor Ontario and lived in Michigan and Arizona prior to his death. Burial was set for Calvary Cemetery after services at St. Pius X Church.

NAACP Director Critiques Arizona School Integration

NAACP director Roy Wilkins told a Phoenix fund raising dinner that Arizona is among the few places outside the South with segregated schools and that Phoenix merely goes through the motions of integration. He warned about recall schemes affecting Roosevelt Elementary and criticized voter rolls purge that he likened to old Mississippi tactics, saying black schools would bear the smallest share of funding and influence.

Fire kills 3 youths in Queen Creek trailer blaze

Three young brothers died and a fourth child escaped after a fire gutted a house trailer near Queen Creek in Maricopa County. Sheriff deputies said the blaze occurred Monday night as the mother, identified as Mrs, was unable to save the others.

Edith I. Haines age 70 died Saturday at Winslow Memorial Hospital. Services were held at 2 pm with burial in Desert View Cemetery. She moved to Winslow twenty years ago and belonged to Winslow Emblem Club and Professional Women’s Club. Born in Nebraska, she is survived by three daughters Helen Johnson of Tonopah Merle Fowler of Nebraska Jessie Phillips of Winslow, six grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Head Start Workshop Underway in Flagstaff

A workshop on parent involvement in Head Starts is underway at the Murdock Head Start Center 410 S Verde St. The session targets parents and staff from three Flagstaff centers, evolving from the statewide Head Start Parents conference in Tucson last month. Ralph Chavez, Arizona regional training officer, will attend to answer questions and aid in planning future involvement.

Holmes Named Deputy Forest Supervisor in Flagstaff

Don O. Seaman announces the promotion of William L. Holmes to deputy forest supervisor on the Coconino National Forest in Flagstaff. Holmes came from Prescott National Forest where he served 7 years as Recreation and Lands Staff Officer and has worked with the Forest Service since graduating Colorado State University in 1950 with a forestry degree. He has held posts across National Forests in Oregon New Mexico and Arizona and served as Sedona District Ranger from 1957 to 1963. In World War II he was infantryman in Italy with the 34th Division. He and wife Marian have five children, three girls and two boys, ages include a 1997 birth year, and the three youngest will attend Flagstaff schools.
