Williams Tax Increase Goes To Public Vote Tuesday
Williams voters will decide Tuesday whether to retain two parts of a recent city sales tax increase. The March measure, in effect since April 1, was controversial enough to trigger a general vote. Polling place is the City County Building at 113 S. First St, open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. An estimated 478 to 500 people are expected to vote. Taverns will close during voting. A group led by Councilman EL Larry Ely, opposed to the tax, protests city actions and hospital funding. Mayor Janes Hoffman defended the tax as needed to keep Williams Hospital operating, while calls for recall actions surface from Fry’s Citizens Committee. Hospital administrators say Medicare readiness and facility upgrades aim for self support. A Williams Concerned Citizens meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. at the city-county building with invited hospital staff and physicians.
