Forecasts for Flagstaff, Sedona, Winslow and Holbrook call for mostly cloudy, warm days with possible isolated thundershowers in higher elevations. Lake Powell expected warm with light winds. Hospital admissions list multiple names. no discharges.
Five more people died on Arizona highways in separate crashes. Thomas P. Polson of Avondale and Martha Sue Matone of Camp Verde were killed when Polson's car drifted across the center line on U S 80 and hit the Malone vehicle. A third car also struck Polson's vehicle. Four others were injured. Hours later David Kopilec of Mesa died in a car pedestrian crash near Mesa. he would have been 16. Dorothy McDonald, 51, was killed in Tucson while crossing an eastside street. An unidentified man was killed in an early morning crash in Maricopa County near a vehicle driven by Elizandro.
Richard Naleski joins Coconind Employment Agency at 100 N San Francisco as counselor. He holds degrees in Philosophy and theology and brings six years of teaching and counseling experience. Agency will perform local placements and national recruiting for Northern Arizona employers.
Building Inspector Vernon Ganske reports April 1973 total permit valuation 745,514 versus 3,596,645 in April 1972, a drop of 2,853,131. Residential permits rise from 368,621 to 428,667, while nonresidential permits fall from 3,228,004 to 314,847 due to large 1972 university and retailer permits.
Douglas Artin Garrison was booked into Coconino County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and exhibiting a weapon not in self defense. He was arrested by Sheriff’s Deputy Chapin at Beatoo’s Truck Plaza west of Williams. A weapon found in his vehicle was seized and is under analysis. Authorities described the incident as threats in the vicinity.
The city finance team estimates no tax increase beyond 51 176 000 this year while drafting a general fund budget of 3 151 019. They project 0 048 068 in revenues for the next year with 1.8 million from state and federal sharing. Fire and police budgets stand at 766 521 and 78 389, rising from prior levels, and personnel services and pensions drive much of the growth.
Sedona Arts Theatre Co stages Williams classic The Glass Menagerie at the Art Barn. Ida Powell as Amanda dominates with a shadowy, hauntingly funny performance that elevates the entire cast including Von Halch as the son and Payiette Shosted as Laura. Director Karl Sennett crafts a balanced production highlighted by ensemble moments and Powell’s outstanding portrayal.
In predawn raids in Lebanon security forces arrested 38 Lebanese and foreign suspects tied to the army Palestinian guerrilla conflict. Among those detained were two West Germans, a Belgian and his Lebanese girlfriend, and two Syrians. One German was charged with spying for Israel after photos of army vehicles near Beirut airport were found. A Belgian and his girlfriend faced charges for shooting at army and guerrilla positions as fighting escalates along the borders with reports of shelling and rockets across multiple fronts. A Lebanese officer and six soldiers captured by guerrillas near Rachaya were reportedly returned by Syrian authorities after border cross movement. a helicopter transported them from Masnaa to a Beirut military hospital where the officer was said to be seriously wounded.
Berkeley man reports missing Motorola electronic components from an office basement in Flagstaff. He bought the material in May 1972 and stored it in several hundred boxes weighing about 6000 pounds, all boxes bearing Motorola labels. Dwight Holobaugh, awarded a $300 scholarship from the Arizona Water and Pollution Control Association, is a Northern Arizona University senior civil engineering student pictured with the check but misidentified in the Daily Sun.
About 390 attendees are expected for the LULAC convention at Holiday Inn East as Hack Amenhoads opens events. Mayor Sylvan Harenberg and Tony Gabaldog will give welcomes and speeches, with seminars on Mexican American politics and women in LULAC to follow.
Navajo leaders hail two congressional bills as a path to settle the 1.8 million acre dispute with the Hopis without uprooting Navajos. The measures, by Conlan Lujan and Meds, propose land or money solutions, including arbitration and financing from the federal government. Navajo officials expres optimism for a fair settlement as a tribal spokesman notes shifting Hopi stance.
A Scottsdale man identified as William Alfred Scott was arrested on aggravated assault and drunken driving charges after DPS officers witnessed him striking a woman in his vehicle. Officers followed his weaving car into a parking lot at DJ's Cocktail Lounge in east Flagstaff and then contacted City Police to effect the arrest. Scott was booked into City Jail.
