Damage Suit Filed Here in Crash Death

Wilma Thames Short filed a 101,885 damage suit in Cocoitina County Superior Court against Phoenix Brick Co and an employee for injuries to her and four children and the death of her husband James A. Thomas in a June 5 1954 Oak Creek Canyon crash involving a Phoenix Brick Co truck. The suit, represented by Flagstar attorney John Grace, seeks 75,000 for each child and 101,855 for her own injuries. The petition cites negligence by the truck driver Spiro John Jonovich as the cause.

PHOENIX AP Members of the House Liquor Study Committee aim to finish the current phase of revising the liquor code today after five weeks of work. They tentatively approve a 7 percent gross sales tax on alcoholic beverages with revenue for education and plan to double tavern and package store licenses over the next decade, increasing by 10 percent each year for counties. Maricopa would gain 22 new licenses annually, Santa Cruz one per year, as population grows, with licenses now allocated every 30 years.

Claude Scott Rites Held Saturday in Winslow

Claude M. Scott, who died of a heart attack in Kansas City on May 20, will be buried in Desert View cemetery in Winslow Saturday at 2 p.m. Elks and Masons will officiate the services. Scott was a Santa Fe dispatcher until 1948 and a lifelong Elks member. Winslow High School will send journalists Gordon Terrill, June Shelly, Pat Copsy, Kenneth Shelly, and Bob Devilleneauve plus instructor to a Journalism Day conference at the University of Tucson.
