US marshal Wayne Colburn defended the handling of the Wounded Knee occupation, calling it a difficult policing problem and a successful outcome under the circumstances. He noted negotiations and orders against firing until fired upon, while deputy Atty. Gen. Hellstein urged harsher treatment if he were in charge.
The House caucus backed an amendment by Rep. Addabbo to reject Nixon's 430 million defense transfer including 150 million for bombing and Indochina activity. Vina Mahoney, 76, a former Flagstaff resident, died April 23 in Hollywood California after heart disease and a stroke during tests. She was a saleslady of Indian curios in several Flagstaff shops and worked at Vaughs Indian Store on Hollywood Blvd. Survived by son Lt. Col. (Ret.) John C. Mahoney and four daughters, 30 great grandchildren. Burial in Redlands California.
