Israeli troops killed three hijackers and captured another on a Sabena airliner at Ben Gurion Airport. Ninety seven passengers and 10 crew members were released after more than 21 hours in captivity. One captain said explosives were aboard. the plane had been restrained by hijackers demanding releases from Israeli prisons.
Russell Turner announces the Boys Club of Flagstaff annual Toys Club Dinner will be May 24 at the Elks Club. Tickets are $25 and on sale from board members or at the club at 2403 N Izabel or by calling 7148997. Entree is Cornish Game Hen with wild rice. preparations include planned after dinner entertainment. John Pflueger notes the event is approved by the United Fund and Chamber Solicitations Review Committee.
Flagstaff businessmen George Nackard and B B Bonner Jr filed civil actions in Coconino County to determine ownership of the Tonto Natural Bridge and surrounding land. They name North Star Development Company and a Phoenix couple as defendants, seek vacating of the bridge premises, and claim damages. The suits reference a signed June 1971 deed by North Star president James Wrabbitt and allege liens and interference with a planned sale.
City Council denied Bow's Bus Stop former Stein Club 105 South Site greaves street a person to person transfer of a Series 7 on premises liquor license after protest from adjacent property owners citing customer behavior and parking concerns. The vote 1 to 0 with Langley dissent ended a rare denial, noted City Manager Leland C. McPherson.
Flagstaff Community Hospital stockholders will hold their annual meeting Wednesday in the dining room. A special meeting begins at 7 p.m. to consider amendments, followed by the general meeting at 7 30. The stockholders will elect a new board president and member and select a new physician as board member. Reports on hospital activities will be given by Board President E Lee Hutching, Administrator W Gold, Medical Star President Dr Geraz Meanon, and Womens Auxiliary President Mrs Lloyd Smith. A financial report will be presented by a representative of Fagstail Ragle and Paces.
Flagstaff City Council is urged to begin a feasibility study for a land recreation area near Koch Field. The Chamber backs a municipal golf course and broader recreational development, and a golf consultant is suggested as Continental Country Club’s 18 hole course may close to the public by 1974.
Services were held Monday in Medford Oregon for former Flagstaff resident William Ardry 36 who died last Friday in Oregon. Ardrey was born August 3 1905 in Gainesville Texas moved to Medford in 1951 from Flagstaff where he had been a power engineer for Arizona Public Service. He worked as a steam engineer at Timber Products Medford until retirement last August. He was a member of St Mark's Episcopal Church Medford and the Masonic Lodge of Flagstaff. Survived by wife Helen a son Bill Lee Ardry Medford three sisters four brothers and four grandchildren.
Grace Fitna Chantler, 85, who lived in Flagstaff for two years, died Sunday in a Phoenix hospital. Services and burial will be in Bremerton, Washington, where she worked in the Navy base payroll department. She was past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Order of Eastern Star Unity Church, Bremerton. Born in Pennsylvania, she is survived by two daughters, Frances Husby of Flagstaff and Margery Guest of Inverness, Florida, plus three grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Mercer Mortuary in Phoenix handling arrangements.
NAU students from Circle K Kayettes Blue Key and campus service groups directed by Jim Durkin delivered a load of rocks to the site at the extreme end of Butler Ave. Circle K members Craig Koziol and Jim Tollerto NAU student Jerry Kel Kayette Mary Maston and Humane Association secretary Mary Jane Mowry were named. Construction is expected to begin soon as funds are still needed.
Flagstaff City Council approved a zoning change for about six acres at Seventh Avenue and Patterson Boulevard from RM to RALM by a 60 vote. Steves and Steves Investment Co. filed the request, with a Planning and Zoning Commission do pass recommendation. The council also approved a T to G3 change on land near Tigty Way and Colony Estates Mobile Homes Subdivision by the same margin. A public hearing was set for May 23 to discuss proposed zoning changes including an appeals board and clarified definitions in the code.
Firefighters reported two major fires on the Coconino National Forest timed with drought conditions. The Mattie fire burned near Rawhide while the Kelly fire began on Easter Sunday northwest of the San Francisco Peaks, threatening closures of Barney Pasture and Bill Williams Mountain areas as officials planned for possible expansions.
Flagstaff Justice of the Peace Joseph Garcia issued warrants for E. E. Maul 38 of Flagstaff on charges of grand larceny and theft. Police say he and his wife Shirley left town Saturday with about $180 in cash and 3300 worth of merchandise from the Gables Area Station, after reportedly stripping a Mobile Haven Subdivision ballet of furnishings. Det. Gilbert Castro notes an all western states bulletin was issued for the couple and a possible accomplice.
NAU researchers gained leadership roles at Prescott during the Arizona Academy of Science gathering. Dr. Errol Montgomery of geology became president elect of the Arizona section of the American Water Resources Association and Hydrology program chairman. Marcus Baker from Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station is slated as Hydrology chair. Marvin Mure Fay of NAU Engineering will serve as secretary treasurer of the Hydrology section. Dr Raymond L Eastwood will chair the AAS Geology section for 1972 73.
Initial investigation links a campfire near the Rattlesnake area south of Turkey Butte Road to the Sunday blaze. Probable cause cited as a campfire or human carelessness, with investigators continuing the probe.
Phoenix AP report says Maricopa County Supervisors refused to pay 3000 dollars to Thomas Jensen after his bicycle struck two cows on an open range county road two years ago. Jensen testified he rode along a lonely road when the incident occurred.
Two Northern Arizona University youths and a visitor to the campus were burned when black powder exploded in room 405 Sechrist Hall at 7:45 p.m. Monday. Beazley and Van Hoy suffered second degree burns to the face, neck, and arms and were taken to Flage staff Community Hospital. Kay had minor burns and was treated at the hospital. The blast blew a window from the room and damaged the door. no criminal negligence was found. NAU Security Chief William Carfield led the investigation with state and campus police aiding. students have been questioned but no reports of further action.
