Joe Richards of the Coconino County Sheriff's Office teams with the Coconino County Search and Rescue Unit to lead a two canyon cleanup event this Saturday. Volunteers will gather at Birch and Agassiz at 9 a.m. to remove trash and scrub obscene writings from rocks, with transportation provided.
Flagstaff City Manager Leland C McPherson and Ralph Bilby are expected to be recommended as city representatives to seek State Water Commission support for the Wilkins Dam. The City Water Use and Utilization Commission meets at 4 p.m. to forward the recommendation to the City Council for routine approval. The panel will also address water restrictions and rates and study a proposed state water information system.
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that leaving juries to decide life or death in capital cases does not violate the Constitution, and that separating the penalty phase is not required. The decision upholds McGautha and Crampton convictions, with dissenters arguing capital punishment may be cruel and unusual. Justice Harlan led the majority. other actions included abortion law hearings and potential newsman source protections.
About 75 delegates attended the Young Democrats convention where NAU leaders, Lloyd Vaconsky and aides were elected to state and regional posts. Delegates heard Senator Cloves Campbell promise an initiative to extend voting rights to 11-year-olds if lawmakers fail to act, and Governor Williams was criticized for proclamations taking time away from state business.
In Washington the Mayday protests clash with police and National Guardsmen as more than 5,000 demonstrators are arrested. Tear gas fills streets near Georgetown and downtown, bridges to Virginia are blocked briefly, and traffic slows while officials say the government remains functioning.
Washington AP report says Senator Paul Pannin of Arizona had his car tires punctured as he drove to the Capitol. The vandalism was part of antiwar demonstrators seeking to disrupt government business, with several drivers among the targets.
Judge and Representative of the Young Democrats organization presided as delegates heard Rep Cleves Campbell of Phoenix announce plans for an initiative campaign if the legislature fails to approve voting 18-year-olds this session.
