Tucson AP report from the University of Arizona notes desert ranges are extremely dry. Barry Freeman of the agricultural extension says prickly pear cactus may serve as emergency feed for cattle as moisture was scarce last summer and prospects for rain through July are bleak. Ranchers have long used prickly pear by burning off needles to access the fleshy pads for cattle feed.
In the Second District special election Democrat Mortis K. Udall faces Republican Mac Matheson amid expected moderate turnout. Voters total 197,281 district wide with 158,643 Democrats and 54,493 Republicans. Co conino County precincts total 9,652, Democrats hold a 6,608 to 2,923 edge. Turnout is seen as higher than the March 7 primary, though public interest remains low outside party workers. Polls open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. with results by about 9 p.m. tomorrow.
Flagstaff officials and the Cogonine County Board of Supervisors reached an agreement on Flagstaff’s participation in financing the County Health Service. The council will be asked to budget 12.00 for participation with past aid totaling 23,780. The state plans to grant 35,000 for health uses plus 5,000 for department purposes, while per capita shares may rise to 25 cents in coming years. A board meeting was called for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss further details.
