Government inspectors are few for nearly 64 000 interstate plants causing ongoing contamination scares. FDA reports include lubricating oil in soda, pesticide in cheese and noodles, metal fragments in cereal, and glass in other products. Industry-wide voluntary guidelines replace prior self-policing as enforcement remains limited.
New York stocks moved gently with the Dow Jones average up 0.47 to 903.95 as trading stayed uneven. NYSE leaders showed a slimadvantage for advances over declines while analysts cited a lack of meaningful news to push the market in either direction.
A 49 year old Prescott man, Fred McFarland of 559 Lincoln Avenue, was charged with driving while intoxicated after an arrest near downtown Flagstaff. Officers Mullen and Stevenson said he submitted to a breathalyzer, recording a blood alcohol content of .23.
A Phoenix man aged year old entered a plea of innocent to a double charge of driving while intoxicated and resisting an officer in City Magistrate Court. The plea was entered by Dan C Repally, 34, of 755 East Moreland Street, after a Sunday arrest following a minor accident and an alleged strike to another driver in the face. Charles Harris Jr 23 of 109 South O Leary Street Flagstaff pled guilty to a two D W charge and was fined 150 dollars or 15 days in City Jail. The disturbing the peace charge against Harris was dismissed by Associate Magistrate A R Brown.
PHOENIX AP A drive to revive a mandatory auto inspection bill is underway after weeks in the House Appropriations Committee. Senate leaders and a governor's committee discuss a $5 limit, address pre 1962 models and foreign cars, and assign responsibility for repair shops in a plan to curb auto exhaust.
A 19 year old Flagstaff youth Daniel Vigil pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and was ordered to pay a 330 dollar fine or spend 90 days in City Jail. Arrested Sunday night, Vigil was found with marijuana after a cigarette butt discarded from a bicycle was checked by a police officer. The sentence allows payment over time.
Security officers investigated two campus arson attempts at Sechrist dormitory after bottles were thrown from a roof and a trash chute fire was started. A witness described the suspect as having long dark hair. Investigators, including Sgt. Thomas Brawley, questioned students in the area as they pursue a possible link between the incidents.
The Flagstaff Boys' Club joins National Boys' Clubs of America observance with a full events program at 1703 E. Felice Ave. Acting director Kim Baylor notes the group serves about 125 members daily and aims to promote juvenile decency through honesty, fair play, and sportsmanship. Nationally the movement serves over 910,000 youths in 47 states. Construction advances on Flagstaff’s new facility include a 2403 N. Izabel St. foundation, a 100 by 100 foot gym, and an arts and crafts shop with offices and a library planned in phases. President Nixon will install the national Boy of the Year at the White House.
