Scuba divers sought Richard Boothe an 18 year old Flagstaff student reported drowned Sunday at Wahweap channel Lake Powell. Depths exceeded 200 feet with five minute limits. dragging continued as officials said surfacing observations would proceed today.
Flagstaff City Council approved by one vote moving ahead with designs for a 346000 improvement district in the Elden Subdivision. No public informational meeting was ordered. Dissenting Councilman Richard T. McDonald urged a meeting. Councilman Joseph J. Rowan abstained. City Engineer E D Voelker and Councilman Joseph J. Rowan spoke prior to the vote.
Prescott judge Jacobson urged training para legal personnel to handle court admin tasks freeing judges for serious cases. He criticized procrastinating Bar members and excessive witnesses in high profile trials and noted rising appeals mostly from defendants who pleaded guilty in lower courts. He spoke amid resignation of Judge J Thomas Brooks and joined by a large audience.
The planning and zoning panel granted 10 and 20 year permits for a gas station, car wash, and trailer park in the Camp Townsend area. The panel heard a Sedona man complain about inadequate posting for the car wash policy and discussed environmental notices for a Forest Highway Three realignment. Commissioner Joynt announced resignation, and a Los Lomas subdivision rezoning was declined for lack of information.
At a regular meeting, Flagstaff City Council accepted a $19,295.12 bid from McDonald Motors for seven Mercury police cars. The bid was second lowest, with Tyrrell Chevrolet offering $19,119.07, and council cautioned the McDonald option largely met specifications despite prior Chevrolet models failing on an electric fuel pump.
Easter services are set across churches in Winslow Flagstaff and Sedona with Maundy Thursday Communion at 7 30 pm and Easter Sunrise services at 6 30 am in Sedona Shrine of Red Rocks. Rev W G Meengs Rev James Summerton and Rev Robert E Fosse are among speakers and ministers listed.
The rector of St Andrews Episcopal Church is general chairman for the 30th annual Easter sunrise service set for six Sunday morning at Grand Canyon. Rev Steve Larkin will be speaker. Attendees should bring seating and arrange lodging in advance at Mather Point Shrine of the Ages Chapel Corporation hosts the event.
Scientists from U.S universities and research facilities gather in Flagstaff to discuss Mars studies from American planetary research projects. The event on NAU campus runs today and Thursday morning with limited seating. Topics include future space missions, Earth analogues to Mars, Mercury findings, and brief 15 minute talks by participants.
