Hopi Leader Vows to Protect Land Rights Amid Rift

Hopi Tribal Council Chair Joan Clarence Hamilton said fences on District 6 grazing land built by Navajos without Hopi consent will be torn down. He warned the government to intervene as Navajo spokesmen call grazing on the land illegal. The fence removal halted last fall by Navajos is claimed as legal. The council vows to use legal rights to protect land while noting incidents of water tank draining and corrals burned.

Harrisburg AP. After 64 witnesses the government rests its conspiracy case against priest Philip Berrigan and six others. Defense motions for acquittal argue no conspiracy and no plot to kidnap Kissinger or blow up government property. Prosecution says evidence shows they plotted to disrupt war actions.

Fire District Sought for Kachina Village

Volunteer firemen from Kachina Village planned to file a petition with the County Board of Supervisors at noon to form the Kachina Village Fire District. Fire Chief Fred Tryon, Legal Committee Chairman Jim Anderson and Treasurer Art Berger lead the drive to serve 1,200 home sites. A 51 percent vote of property owners is required. if approved funds could be available to aid the volunteer department by December.

Markets Slip After Thursday Gains in Dow Jones

New York markets opened with declines after a sharp rise on Thursday. At 2 p.m. the Dow Jones average stood at 942.88, down 1 point, while NYSE declines led early but were slightly ahead by a narrow margin as trading stayed moderate.

Missing Corrigan son sparks coast hunt in fog

Los Angeles AP reports Roy W. Corrigan, 22, son of famed aviator Douglas Wrong Way Corrigan, vanished with passenger Roger Powell after takeoff in a Cessna 172 from Santa Ana en route to Laguna Beach. Civil Air Patrol planes searched along the coast as weather limited visibility. The elder Corrigan rose to fame in 1938 for an unauthorized transatlantic flight.

Two Arrested For Loitering Around School

A Colorado youth Delbert L. Wondsmall 20 Henderson and John Ryberg 18 Flagstaff were arrested near Thomas School after two days of loitering near Coconino High School. They face disturbing the peace and loitering charges. Asst Principal Joe Brown attributed a truancy problem to their presence. Patrolman Tarr reported the incident and the subsequent abuse toward Brown.

Dinner Triggers Drive Kickoff Dinner for Cancer Society

A kickoff dinner for the American Cancer Society Crusade, held Thursday at the Afton House, drew about 30 volunteers. Dr. Dave Graef of Phoenix spoke on advances toward cancer control and cure as April was named Crusade month. Flagstaff and Williams volunteers attended, with $6,500 set as the Coconino County goal.
