BIA Closes Fort Defiance Indian School for Safety

Blast Damages Building At Non-Union Coal Mine
A dynamite blast at a coalloading building at a nonunion coal mine in Lee County near the Kentucky line caused several small fires but produced no injuries. Ramsey Brock of Harlan Kentucky said the blast looked planned by someone familiar with the mine. The Brock family rents the facility from Halwart Of & Gas Co of Knoxville. Blue Diamond Coal Co had operated the mine for about 50 years prior, with a peak staff of 600. The mine was run by the United Mine Workers Union before its recent closure. Deputy Porter Greer reported the blast occurred around 2 am.
