All-Indian County Hatchet Fight On Arizona Plan
Nearing Tuesday hearing before the House Natural Resources Committee the proposal to carve out an all Indian county in northeastern Arizona drew fierce opposition from Hopi Navajo and Apache voices. Hopi Chairman Clarence Halliten warned such a move would worsen Indian non Indian tensions and threaten Hopi sovereignty. Navajo leader Bruce Babbitt and Max Taylor Navajo County board chairman argued the plan reduces tribal authority and cuts county tax bases by an estimated 12.5 to 20 million, crippling school districts and altering Medicare premium payments. Apache County Manager Buzz Haws noted new costs for Indian care and questioned how funds are allocated.
