Holmes warned rejection would delay construction by at least a year while the council weighed the city need for housing and developer claims the project would help. Rowan urged focusing on land use and drainage issues later, as much of the surrounding area is zoned high density. The ordinance passed 4-2 on first readings. further council action remains uncertain.
The Flagstaff City Council postponed final plat action for University Heights Subdivision to its next regular meeting March 23 due to incomplete final engineering plans. Planning Director Van Mer Donald cited readiness issues while attorney H Karl Mangum apologized for the delay and expressed disappointment in the engineers.
Jack Peters, program director for Coconino County with NADEC, resigns to take a similar job in Reno Nevada. Acting Director Joe Montoya says applicants will be reviewed this week and a successor named by month end. Peters, 33, longtime Flagstaff resident, began with NYC in 1967 and rose to agency director after NADEC merger. He is a NAU alumnus, class of 1966.
The Dow Jones Industrial average moved toward the 900 level as the market inched higher in stepped up trading. At noon the Dow rose 1.15 to 899.78 with advancers leading declines 7 to 5 on the New York Stock Exchange as quotations from NASD at 10:30 am showed mixed prices across major issues.
Coconino Search and Rescue Unit nears halfway to a 3000 goal for a mobile base camp trailer. Flagstaff Laundry and Ury Cleaning, with locations in Flagstaff, Phoenix, Mike's Pike, and Greenlaw Village, will donate 50 percent of dry cleaning dollar volume on Wednesday toward the project. The nonprofit group, with over 150 volunteers, aims to use the 19 and a half foot self contained trailer as shelter, portable radio shack, and food prep site during remote area searches.
Mr and Mrs Herman Klop ping of Flagstaff file suit in Superior Court against the estate of Lesley Root seeking nearly 8000 dollars in damages from a June 7 1989 collision that rear ended their car. Their two children Felicia and Poy were passengers and suffered injuries along with vehicle damage and lost wages for Mrs Klopping.
Arizona State University Young Republicans urge staff expansion better training and reform at Fort Grant Industrial School for Boys in a yearlong study. They recommend age and offense based grouping, increased staff, positive rewards, stronger academics and vocational programs, and dormitory changes to 1-2 person rooms. Gary Nelson led a five member team noting secrecy of the research and praising Superintendent Steve Vinkevich while citing his limits.
Northern Arizona University launches a child friendly stage version of Cinderella in the University Theatre with matinee 3 pm Wednesday and 7:50 pm shows on the other three days. Marcia Milbrath stars as Cinderella with Brian Greenly as the prince and Donna Pownell as the wicked stepmother.
Doris Frances Slade died Saturday at Wine stow Memorial Hospital at 72. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Holbrook Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with burial in Holbrook Cemetery. She and husband Roy ran a Holbrook restaurant business until retiring five years ago. he died February 17. Born in Kansas, she moved from Durango Colorado to McNary in 1938 and to Holbrook in 1942. Survived by son George Swarts Jr of Ogden Utah, two brothers, four sisters, six grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Senate Education Committee approved a plan to appoint the state superintendent of public instruction by the board of education rather than electing the official. The nine member board would include four lay members and be appointed by the governor with Senate confirmation. Voters would ratify the amendment. A related fingerprinting bill for all school district employees passed 5 to 2 with notable opposition. The committee also rejected changing school board election timing to odd years. A separate measure to deposit 10 cents on beer and soft drinks failed for now, though supporters remain.
