A new storm blankets northern Arizona with snow and gusty winds raising Flagstaff depth to three inches. The storm edges the region with 3000 feet snow level and possible advisories for Winslow, with travel chains recommended and two morning accidents reported.
President Nixon and Senate leaders condemned a bombing that damaged the Capitol Senate wing. Officials noted the act as political violence with a letter linked to U S operations in Laos. Authorities and politicians called for calm, heightened security, and investigation.
Elijah A. Baker 97, one of Arizona’s last Spanish American War veterans, died Saturday at Ft. Whipple VA Center. Funeral Tuesday at 2 pm in the center chapel, burial in Veterans Cemetery. Longtime Sedona resident, formerly in St. Johns and Phoenix, born Cedar County Missouri, homesteaded near San Francisco Monks, enlisted 1898 Cuban campaign, later ran Flagstaff to Grand Canyon stagecoach line. Survived by daughter Doana Baker of Sedona.
The Flagstaff Planning and Zoning Commission will resume its public hearing on the proposed zoning ordinance Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. City Planning Director Van McDonald notes the commission, led by Chairman William A. Garbaring, may extend the hearing to a later evening time to give the public another chance to protest the provisions. The ordinance, replacing the 1949 text amended about 1150 times, faced mass protest when first released.
In a morning Supervisors meeting, William N. Foote of Hopkins Frost and Foote was appointed to the County Planning and Zoning Commission while Joseph Ruiz of Southern Union Gas was named to represent the county on the Cooperative Area Manpower Planning Commission. The hearing process on zoning changes near North Beaver Street and Sunnyside area revealed about two dozen protest letters, with officials preparing final reports and awaiting City Council action, including a public hearing.
American transports deliver hundreds of South Vietnamese troops to the northern front as U S forces boost air and ground operations against North Vietnamese supply routes. Casualties mount with 316 Saigon soldiers killed and 681 wounded in Laos, while North Vietnamese deaths exceed 3,000. American pilots report heavy strikes and more helicopters sent to Khe Sanh and Laos front, with some reinforcements crossing into Laos and the border strength steady at about 16,000.
An early morning blast in the Senate wing of the Capitol damaged interior rooms and a men’s restroom after a warning call linked to antiwar protest. No injuries reported as Capitol Police and FBI seek the caller while President Nixon calls the act shocking.
Two Flagstaff residents are listed in serious condition at Flagstaff Community Hospital after a car left Lake Mary Road and crashed into a tree twelve miles south of Flagstaff early Sunday. Earl Cantford 38 of West Oak and Miss Leslie Rathi 21 a Northern Arizona University student from Rolling Mills California were in guarded condition in the ICU. Cantford suffered severe internal injuries and underwent five and a half hours of surgery. Rathi suffered multiple fractures. Also traveling in the car were NAU students Mr and Mrs Michael River of Cottage City with River listed in fair condition and his wife Gayl with minor cuts. Charlie Lancaster of Williams Air Force Base helped transport the injured. Investigations underway with Sheriff Deputy Robert Kaecker reporting incomplete details. Cantford, an NAU student and former Flagstaff Legion official, has resided in Flagstaff for about 10 years.
AP reports the extension gives motorists until midnight to mail motor vehicle registration and license fee payments without penalty. The Feb 28 deadline moved 24 hours due to Sunday. State official David Campbell said payments postmarked after midnight incur a 36.25 late charge. last year about 25,000 were late, adding 153,000 in fees.
