General to Present Meritorious Safety Award Friday

Three Chicago men were killed in a three vehicle crash east of Winona on U S 66. Richard Dolphin 18 Warren Woodrick 21 and James McCabe 28 died when their car struck a tractor trailer after a sideswipe. Bartlett F McLallen Jr 41 and Ira Pitchford 66 escaped injuries. Investigator James F Brierley planned no inquest. The Tucson death was the last toll in the 1862 traffic count.

A giant American Airlines jet crashed after takeoff from Idlewild Airport, killing all 95 aboard in the nation s worst single air disaster. The Boeing 107 Astrojet disappeared into a marshy area on Long Island s south shore as flames spread over water and shore. Witnesses reported a loud expansion before the crash, and rescue efforts found bodies, debris, and a plastic toy dog scattered across flooded marshland.
