Army Units Use Navajo Depot En Route to Maneuvers

Regular army units from the western United States stop at Navajo Army Depot west of Flagstaff on their way to summer maneuvers in Southern California. A Fort Carson convoy was the second unit this week to stay overnight, with other units bound for the west coast using the facilities in the coming days, a local military representative said.

Arizona Public Service officials credited heavy insulation with protecting critical radio equipment at a mountaintop facility near Flagstaff during a forest fire. The insulation helped keep heat from damaging equipment and limited losses to about 50 thousand dollars across ten antennae on a steel tower.

Phelps Dodge Denies Charges in Labor Talks

Phoenix AP reports Phelps Dodge negotiator disputes union charges of proposed to eliminate cost-of-living protection while offering a 26 cent hourly wage rise. Talks continue with fringe benefits as June 30 contract deadline nears affecting about 20,000 Arizona copper workers in Phoenix Tucson and Miami. Union authorization used to threaten strike at Magma Copper Co if no new pact by expiry.
