James Earl Ray Recaptured Near Brushy Mountain in Leaves
James Earl Ray was tracked by bloodhounds Sandy and Lit No Red after a 544 hour flight. He was found in a pile of leaves five miles from Brushy Mountain State Prison, exhausted and cooperative, ending the escape with six inmates. Donald Ray Caylor was spotted in Oak Ridge and captured. only Douglas Shelton remained at large.

Washington AP The House Ways and Means Committee rejected President Carter's energy tax proposal to raise private plane fuel tax by four cents per gallon. The 15 to 1 vote against followed staff estimates that higher levy would barely affect energy conservation, despite potential $470 million in revenue from 1978 to 1985. The panel also approved extending the four-cent gasoline tax through 1985, with Oct. 1, 1975 expiration. Unclear fate remains for the highway trust fund after 1979.
