A preliminary hearing began for Jonah Lee Curley on a manslaughter charge tied to the July 10 beating death of Nealwood Begay in Rock Springs. Searchers comb Kaibab National Forest after Arnold, 26, vanished July 21 from Fort Huachuca. His truck was found abandoned south of Williams with plates missing but papers intact. Deputies suspect foul play and plan a two square mile search with about 40 men around the truck area. Arnold, reassigned to a Salt Lake City recruiter post, was last seen to meet his parents in Kanab, Utah. He is described as 5'10" with brown hair and blue eyes, wearing cowboy garb when out of uniform. Call the sheriff with any sightings.
Police search for the driver of a vehicle that struck 19 year old Carlos Diaz as he rode east on Paseo Del Flag Wednesday night. Diaz was taken to Flagstaff Hospital and later released.
Deputies report 43 year old Jack Cody of Winslow was found unconscious beside Leupo Road and U S 89 after apparently falling from the back of a pickup as it turned. Witnesses saw the fall at the intersection. Cody was taken to Flagstaff Hospital for head injuries and cuts. He had been released from the Public Health Service Hospital in Winslow days earlier and was being returned to recuperate. Investigators could not identify the pickup driver from witness information.
James E. Avery, 28, NAU student, died at his home Tuesday. Born Feb 14, 1944, in Flagstaff, he served in the Air Force from 1961 to 1964 and studied psychology and philosophy. Services Saturday at Springhill Baptist Church. burial at Citizens Cemetery. Survivors include his mother Reola Avery, brother Marvin Avery, one uncle Henry Snorton Ye ma, and four aunts and one uncle out of state. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. today at Flagstaff Mortuary.
