An Arizona man Hichard Gary Nielsen age 22 and his eight month old son Joseph died when their car left US 169 near Cliff New Mexico, overturned three times and burned. Nielsen asleep at wheel. Nielsen from Glendale living in Flagstaff attended Northern Arizona University and planned to teach retarded children. Survived by wife Jennifer and parents at Holloman AFB with out of state grandmother and two sisters. Contributions to the National Association for Retarded Children requested.
A spare tire fell from a northbound tractor trailer on the Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix and struck a southbound car, killing Russell Menard and his wife Pietran. The driver reportedly fled the scene while southbound traffic halted, causing additional accidents and an ambulance call. A separate report notes Victor Matthews Jr., 18, of Buckeye, died from injuries in a two vehicle crash nearby.
