Congress moves to halt the proposed phaseout of the Coconino National Forests regional headquarters in Albuquerque W M. The action cancels the plans and stops the remap sequence, signaling a delay in forest administration changes.
Forest Supervisor Donald Seaman proposes a July 2 to September 3 temporary closure of the Cinder Hills area to motorized travel without permits. Permits available at Elden Ranger District office in Greenlaw Shopping Center. Closure aims to protect resources while a land use plan is developed amid strong opposition to regional conformance plans.
Trudy Purley of Laguna Indian Pueblo New Mexico has been named Miss North American Indian Princess. She previously filled Miss Indian Pow Wow Princess in Flagstaff and was first runner up for Miss Indian New Mexico. She plans to enter Miss Indian America Pageant in Wyoming in July. Competition was in Mission Hills California with judging on talent beauty personality and poise. Purley is a Rosewell High School graduate active in Red Belles drill team.

A federal judge empaneled a second grand jury to investigate the Watergate scandal at the request of Archibald Cox. The second panel will probe possible violations of federal laws including the campaign contributions act, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and obstruction of justice.
Memorial services for Cecil Fortner 66 who died Monday in Phoenix will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Flagstaff Mortuary Chapel with Rev Dan Erwin officiating. Fortner a Flagstaff businessman long active in restaurants and auto work retired and moved to Phoenix last October. A state trucking firm faced a citation for faulty brakes after a runaway truck dumped potentially explosive chemicals in central Arizona. Authorities accuse the firm of improper placarding and failing to list hazardous materials on a manifest. If the incident had worsened, it could have mirrored the Kingston propane tank car disaster that killed 11.
