Joe E Brown a former New Mexico educator was named Assistant Principal at Coconino High School by Superintendent David Williams. The 30 year old will replace Robert Burns who resigned to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Oregon and will report to Principal Brian Turner immediately.
Rainmaking plans seed a sparsely populated region including national forest land to boost precipitation. Telfer said seeding will use pyrotechnic flares releasing silver iodide to form artificial ice crystals, with planes operating through August from Safford and Show Low, aided by radar and a Denver computer data link. Authorities report DUI charges for three individuals in Flagstaff.
Elmer A. Hubbard Jr. has purchased Webber Brothers Oil Co. and is named Standard Oil’s wholesale distributor in Flagstaff. Hubbard, a 1947 Flagstaff High School grad and UA business graduate, served as city councilman and led the Winter Sports Festival. He and wife Charlotte have three children. Orrin Webber is retired and five ing in Sun City. Kenneth Webber deceased.
Flagstaff Board of Education plans discussion on a complaint from 74 Brewer Road residents in Sedona alleging that Babbitt Lumber activity blocks Brewer Road and endangers students and pedestrians. They seek road widening, bridge pedestrian access, and cleaner rights of way while the board also considers contracts for next year and a foreign exchange student.
The Coconino County Council on Alcoholism will hold a public meeting Monday at 7:50 p.m. in the County Health Dept auditorium on Ft Valley Road to discuss future plans. The council seeks members and broad public support, inviting anyone with an interest in alcoholism issues in Flagstaff and the county to attend.
Northlands and district residents in Sedona anticipate a tuition waiver for a student and formal changes to the Certified Personnel Salary Schedule after negotiations. The board will review preliminary specs for a Coconino High School addition to house a walk in cooler for the district hot lunch program. Public meeting set for 6 30 p m at Flagstaff High School Library with invited attendees.
In Tucson, the Pima County Board of Supervisors urged State Attorney General Gary Nelson to refrain from defending the county in a lawsuit about a new voter registration law. Jim Murphy said Thomaz Jay discussed the matter with Rose Silver and the county would not back the law, citing a provision that lowers minority re registration percentages for Mexican Americans and others.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Robert Myers awarded the remaining 237000 of James Kidd estate to the American Society for Psychical Research in New York to study whether a soul can be seen as it leaves the body. The ruling reversed an earlier Barrow Neurological Institute grant after the Arizona Supreme Court overturned it.
Twenty two Britons and three Trishmen completed a nine day Grand Canyon voyage from Lee's Ferry to Diamond Ranch in kayaks canoes and rafts. Leader Mike Clark said one boat was damaged but the trip was successful. The group planned a 20 day return trip for 1973 and one woman paddled the full course.
