Five Camp Crowder soldiers were awarded the Soldier's Medal for heroism in rescuing two women and two small children from a burning home in a Joplin area suburb. Cooper of Hialeah Park. and Private Calvin L. Williams of Chalfont.

Soldiers Rescue Four From Burning Highway 71 House
On March 2, two soldiers returning to post found a residence on Highway 71 two miles from the county line engulfed in flames. They forced entry through smoke and fire, rescuing four occupants who were overcome and unconscious. They were taken to a hospital by the soldiers’ car. Victims include Mrs Vivian Beck and Miss Lucille Sawyer, with injuries described as minor burns to feet and legs.

Son of Virginia State President Emeritus Becomes Officer Overseas
John M. Gandy Jr., son of Dr. John M. Gandy president emeritus of Virginia State College Petersburg, promoted to Warrant Officer Junior Grade on June 12 while serving as technical sergeant with an engineer regiment in the New Hebrides. He is a 1937 Virginia State graduate with an MA in Sociology from Ohio State 1938, and 1940 42 studies at Chicago for a Master Social Service Administrator. He has worked as case worker in the Aid to Dependent Children program and as assistant field secretary for the Negro Organization Society of Virginia. His duties include processing payrolls for over 600 men and advising on welfare matters for Army morale. His parents reside on campus at Virginia State College in a home provided by the institution.

Field to be dedicated in honor of George Watson at Fort Benning
Fort Benning Georgia plans a July 4 dedication of the George Watson Memorial Field at the Reception Center. Private Watson, a Distinguished Service Cross recipient, from Birmingham Alabama, died March 8 1943 in New Guinea after aiding others at sea. Brigadier General Hobson and Mrs Watson’s aunt will lead, with Truman Gibson Henry Stimson to speak. A parade a.m. ceremonies p.m. include a bronze plaque unveiling and a flag unfurling. A post game follows.
