Miami Beach seats burst with delegates in dungarees and Dashikis as George McGovern’s bid for 271 California delegates looms. The hall glitters with red white and blue while security and protests mix with carnival ambience and a nation watching.
The Democratic race deepened as Muskie proposed a nine-man parley of all eight declared candidates to resolve California credentials disputes. McGovern rejected the plan saying a closed session serves no purpose. Muskie warned of growing party polarization as Humphrey and Wallace camps weighed options.
Seven AIM demonstrators arrested during PawWow ceremonies July 2 face bonds and disqualification motions at 1 p.m. in Flagstaff Justice Court. Six men are bonded at 26 000 and one at 30 000. defense argues for bail reduction. Prosecution seeks higher bonds. conflicts of interest alleged against county attorney Flournoy. More than 300 young demonstrators led by Vietnam Veterans Against the War marched on Miami Beach Convention Hall urging Democrats to nominate a candidate who will end the war immediately. The rally included a Viet Cong flag, a five block march from Flamingo Park, and protests by Zippies and Yippies during the weekend actions.
In Los Angeles, Judge William Byrne will personally question jurors after barring attorney questioning in the Pentagon Papers trial of Ellsberg and Russo. The defendants oppose the move, arguing it limits defense screening. The case, a landmark espionage prosecution, carries potential sentences up to 115 years for Ellsberg and 35 for Russo. Ellsberg admits releasing the study. Russo says he helped copy documents.
Series tickets are $90 and allow access to all festival-sponsored performances. Individual tickets range from $1 to $3.50 and are sold at the festival office in NAU University Union Room 101, Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, and East Meets West in Greenlaw Shopping Center. The festival opens Wednesday with art and music at the Plagetify Art Barn and a chamber recital by Guy Fallot and Emanuelle Lamasse.
