Madam Sewell age unknown died Monday afternoon in Phoenix. A longtime resident from Oklahoma City she lived 21 years at 15th and Madison Street and was active in civic and religious affairs. She perfected a gas mask from salvage inner tubes and offered it to the government. Survived by son John Wagner and her parents Reverend and Mrs Boyd of Phoenix.
The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority held a barbecue picnic at East Lake Park to benefit the Colored Orphans Home planned for South 7th St. It will be the state’s only home of its kind for Negro children. The dinner offered barbecued beef potato salad and brown beans.
Henry Armstrong's manager George Moore said Promoter Max Joss offered $10,000 for a August 2 bout at Ebbetts Field Brooklyn. Armstrong would not commit until an opponent is named.
A dedicated clubhouse and playground for colored Boy Scouts was unveiled on Adams and 12th Streets with over 500 attendees. Mayors and civic leaders spoke, Fort Huachuca Band performed, and the Phoenix Civic Welfare League sponsors said project funds come from 16 organizations. Troop No. 7 will use the site for volleyball basketball skating and dancing on two large lots.
The War Department awarded its Exceptional Service Medal to two Black employees for heroism at work. Ernest Wheeler of Red River Ordnance Depot Texas covered a burning mechanic to save him from exploding flames. Mrs Allese G Lee of Pine Bluff Arsenal Arkansas tore burning clothing from a restrained coworker amid an explosion, suffering burns herself. A July 9 bond drive at Phyllis Wheatley Center Phoenix features Kingman Air Base Orchestra and Newton Bronson with aim to raise $20000.
Mrs Ellen Willis Blunt formerly of Mobile Alabama died June 25 at her daughter's home 28 N Park St Phoenix after long illness. She was blind and widowed since 1933. Survived by four children 17 grandchildren eight great grandchildren a niece and a nephew. Funeral July 3 at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev J H Payton officiating. Burial at Mobile Arizona beside husband Jack Blunt.
Federal Works Agency approved about 83700 dollars for a communicable disease ward and a residence for internes at St Monica s Hospital. W H Cheney Berkeley California regional director notified Senator Carl Hayden that funds were allotted. Plans by Lescher and Mahoney were submitted with Public Health Service support. Bids will be invited soon.
Mrs Minnie Gibson of 910 S 6th Ave Phoenix died Thursday morning June 29 after months of arthritis. Survived by nieces Daisy Moore Alice McGee Edna Gonaway nephews John Patrick Durham and brother in law Zack Durham. Came to Phoenix in 1922 with sister Mrs Durham. Funeral services held Monday morning July 3.
