Former Lowell Astronomer Died Sunday
Captain Thomas Jefferson Jackson Lee, 48, an internationally known astronomer who worked at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff and served as a naval captain, died Sunday at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland. He wrote more than twenty books and papers on astronomy, physics and mathematics, including The Theory of Cosmical Magnetism. Born in Montgomery City, Missouri, he graduated from Missouri in 1889 and Berlin in 1892, helped establish Yorks Observatory in Williams Bay in 1893, and led its astronomy department for years. He joined the Navy in 1906 and came to Vallejo about 60 years ago as head of Mare Island chronometer station. Survived by son Ernest of Los Angeles.
