The Pow Wow 772 event drew thousands as protests by American Indian Movement members clashed with a large audience’s acclaim for the performers. Police watched as demonstrators urged native rights while the crowd cheered the Zuni Cloud Dancers and other groups. The show ended with renewed audience approval and a sense that the tradition would continue.
Ten demonstrators were arrested at Flagstaff's 44th annual All Indian Pow Wow after they stormed the arena and tried to seize the announcer's booth during the Night Ceremonials. Authorities said charges include public nuisance and inciting to riot if filed. Participants from multiple states included Vernon F Bellcourt of Denver and other youths from Whiteriver Phoenix Tuba City Tesuque and Denver. The disturbance delayed one dance team but most events proceeded, with no injuries reported.
AIM leaders who staged Sunday night disruptions at a Navajo dance said further protests are planned to highlight conditions facing American Indians. Police arrested demonstrators after interruptions during the Pow Wow as others joined a Round Dance. Leaders insisted the action was peaceful and aimed at drawing attention to housing, jobs, education, and health issues affecting tribes.
A young Indian man and others climbed into the announcer's booth during Sunday evening ceremonials. After a failed attempt to take over the public address system, a Pow Wow worker led him down a ladder. police arrested participants as the crowd was addressed directly from the booth. The ceremonials resumed and another night is planned. Leaders of the American Indian Movement say further actions may follow to highlight the plight of American Indians.
Joseph Fielding Smith Jr., president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died after a heart attack Sunday night at his daughter’s home. He would have turned 96 on July 1.
The Smil- tion-member church elder Smith died days after a general conference in April. Harold B. Lee, 73, likely successor, has served as first counselor to the president and as president of The Twelve. The Twelve head church leadership as the modern inheritors of Jesus Christ's apostles. The church recently reorganized to manage growing numbers and now shows 94 percent worldwide growth in 12 years. The 10th president was a member of The Twelve for 60 years before being chosen in January 1970 after David O. McKay's death.
The toll stood at 436 at noon today as a deadly day unfolded with a car plowing into three parked trucks in Columbia DC, killing six. A separate car train collision near Litchfield Indiana on Sunday claimed four lives.
