Tomorrow polls open 6 am to 9 pm as Flagstaff voters choose from ten council candidates, narrowed to six, and three mayoral hopefuls reduced to two. Past primaries show leaders often win the general. about 7,400 eligible voters, with turnout around a third, are urged to participate and shape growth plans for Flagstaff.
A $100,000 bond was set today for kidnap suspect Robert H. Moormann, 23, at Flagstaff Justice Court. Moormann, in the city jail since Friday after return from Las Vegas, appeared with attorney William Egan as County Attorney J. Michael Flournoy pressed for a high bond. Judge Joseph Garcia set it high, noting it to be among the largest in recent years. The judge ordered a preliminary hearing date to be scheduled as soon as possible. Moormann is charged with kidnapping Shelly Mickelson, daughter of Norman Mickelson, during a chase from U.S. 66 and U.S. 40 toward Las Vegas, where he surrendered. the girl was unharmed and returned to Flagstaff.
In Charlotte a city attorney says garbage collectors were doing their job when they discarded a woman’s just-washed clothing. Attorney Henry Underhill recommends denying a $175.11 claim by Mrs. Isabell McGee for the lost garments after she left them on a trash container briefly.
Flagstaff residents vote in a city primary with 7 400 eligible voters. Ten council candidates compete for three seats, while three vie for a two year mayor term starting April 1. Polls open at 6 am in four locations and close at 7 pm. This election uses paper ballots as machines are not available due to Cogonino County’s shift to computerized voting. Incumbent Sylvan L. Harenberg seeks a third term alongside Laura A. Runke and C Russell Turner. Other council candidates include Douglas Twiford A J Tony Lee Robert L. Moody Ray Larkey Bill Morrall Karla Ann Riordan John W Wagner Bill Magis J Dale Nations and Mel Hannah.
Flagstaff voters go to the polls Tuesday from 6 am to 7 pm in a city primary. The top six candidates advance to the March 24 general election, with the two mayoral frontrunners securing spots on the ballot. Harenberg seeks a third term. Hannah entered late and cannot appear on ballots. Ballot rotation applies to all remaining candidates.
Voters will cast ballots in four city precincts across Flagstaff with headquarters at the American Legion Hall Precinct 1 Murdock Recreation Center Precinct 2 Ponderosa Recreation Center and the Community Building of Siler Homes Precinct 4. Absentee ballots are being sent by City Clerk Dick Williams and must be returned by 6 pm on election day. The American Legion Club near the polls will stay closed until polls close at 7 pm.
Flagstaff reveals the Third Annual Winter Festival a month of events designed for Central Arizona residents. It opens with open swimming tomorrow at East Flagstaff Junior High and features ten activities in its first week including music art and a possible ski rodeo. Thursday brings NAU basketball Boise State WAU Gym at 8 pm while more swimming and two art exhibits start at 9 am.
A daylight savings bill for Arizona died in the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee after business groups opposed it. Northern Arizona backers and Flagstaff Chamber urged daylight time while Parker and Colorado River interests warned of losses to California tourists. Critics cited effects on theaters, schools, and labor, and the measure died on a voice vote.
Arizona Democrats picked delegates for the state convention with Edmund Muskie leading in total pledged delegates while John Lindsay surpassed expectations in some counties. Coconino County swung toward Lindsay, allotting six for Lindsay and four for Muskie as 17 county delegates head toward Phoenix February 12. Statewide, Muskie, Lindsay, and McGovern split the national convention stakes as cumulative voting shaped the result.
The Flagstaff Planning and Zoning Commission meets Tuesday at 7 30 a m with a large group of Swiss Manor property owners presenting 40 protest requests. They seek to rezone land near a new subdivision from agricultural residential to medium density multi family to support a large low income housing complex. Also on the agenda is a Cheshire Estates rezoning from single dwelling to multiple dwelling and two conditional use permits plus a continuation of a public hearing on a zoning change near the Covered Bridge Art Gallery.
Washington AP reports President Nixon’s administration plans no tax increase despite deficits and a record debt ceiling request from $430 billion to $480 billion. Treasury Secretary Connally and OMB Director Shultz say spending control and rising tax revenues from growth will fund the economy. They note deficits arise from slow growth and forecast a needed future debt raise.
New York AP reports the latest Gallup Poll shows President Nixon ahead by one percentage point over Senator Muskie in a three way race that also includes Governor Wallace, indicating a tight national contest amid campaign dynamics.
