Washington AP The Senate opened with a push to cut filibusters via a three fifths vote backed by a bipartisan bloc led by Church Idabo Fearson. Southern and small state lawmakers remain opposed citing minority rights and free debate. Nixon urged quick action on desegregation aid, anti hijacking funding, tax hikes, and other measures, while noting some items will be delayed.

Coconino County Planning and Zoning Commission schedules public hearings at 8 p.m. in the Supervisors Chambers to consider rezoning requests. Grand Canyon Unit 18 near Valley seeks general to residential recreation with 2 acre lots, Pinewood Unit 13 Munds Park seeks general to residential with 6000 sq ft lots, and an eight acre Munds Park site seeks general to heavy commercial with 6000 sq ft minimums, with layout approvals for Grand Canyon and Pinewood.
New Flagstaff Boys Club officers were installed Saturday night at the Afton House dinner. Leonard Holt became second vice president, Joan Pflueger was named president, John Luke as first vice president, and Sam Pappas was elected secretary-treasurer. Present was Wat Pappas.
Fighting rages in Cambodia with Cambodian and Vietnamese forces repelling attacks near Phnom Penh while a Tet cease-fire unfolds in South Vietnam. Saigon proposes freeing all sick and wounded prisoners, including Viet Cong and North Vietnamese, amid ongoing U S air strikes against northern routes. The Viet Cong announced a four day cease-fire, but Saigon accuses them of violations as talks continue. South Vietnam reports 2,080 sick and wounded POWs with 1,287 Viet Cong and 783 North Vietnamese among them. North Vietnam’s holdings are unclear. The plan envisions prisoner exchanges in gradual groups, with timing unspecified.
Martel, a convicted accomplice in the 1969 Larr Broughall death, fled in a pickup after fueling without paying in Prescott and Page. Utah Patrol and Page rangers stopped him near Kanab. He is held under an agreement with the Department of Corrections amid threats to his family from the Broughall case testimony.

Funeral services for Leon B. Sutton, 78, will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at Gatlon Gibbs Mortuary in Williams. Burial with Masonic rites follows at Williams Cemetery. Sutton, born in Ottawa Kansas, moved to Williams in 1937, worked for Babbitts Bros Retail, captained the Navajo Ordnance Fire Department, and owned the Towne House Restaurant for 10 years. He is survived by his wife, ten daughters, three brothers, and three sisters.
New York police recount a two year old boy driving a shiny 1870 Oldsmobile for a week. He found the unlocked car near his Upper East Side home and drove to Central Park by day and a theater by night. He shared rides with four younger boys who later told their parents and police.
The 43rd annual meeting of the Northern Arizona Society of Science and Art will elect a new board of trustees and review 1970 activities. Dr Vincent Schaefer of SUNY will discuss global atmospheric pollution, with all society members invited to attend at 8 pm in the Museum Special Exhibits Room.
Today's Markets reports a slight Dow gain of 1.51 points to 287.23 with heavy trading. The New York Stock Exchange showed more advances than declines, and at 1:30 p.m. EST listed prices included Allis Chalmers, American Can, AT&T, Chrysler, Eastman Kodak, Ford Motor, General Electric, IBM, Sears Roebuck, United Airlines, U.S. Steel and many others with mixed fractional gains and losses across a broad market snapshot.
Nearly 70 professional environmental workers in northern Arizona formed the Northern Arizona Association of Environmentalists to coordinate agency operations. Charter members split into a resolution and charter committee to explore structure, drawing from Coconino Kalbab ami Sitgreaves forests, five county health departments, state and federal agencies, and Flagstaff scientific and educational groups. Initial meeting was January 20 at the Coconino Department of Public Health.
