The Flagstate City Council will seek to extend emergency water rates passed in summer 1971 for six months. President Nixon seeks 64 million dollars to launch the Buckskin Mountains Tunnel and Havasu Pumping Plant under the Central Arizona Project. Of that total, 53 million funds contract authority liquidation tied to Navajo Power commitments, with preconstruction studies and final design data for remaining parts of CAP. Additional allocations cover New Mexico CAP, Colorado River and other reclamation efforts, and several feasibility studies across the Western water plan, with Army Corps of Engineers requesting 87.7 million for planning and construction in Arizona water projects.
Four northern Arizona residents received Silver Beaver awards and Mrs Eudora Patterson earned the Silver Fawn at the Grand Canyon Council banquet. A busy week unfolds as 12 candidates for Flagstaff city offices prepare for a Wednesday meeting at 8 p.m. in the Coconino High School auditorium. The event kicks off the primary season ahead of the March general election, with six council hopefuls and two mayoral contenders advancing.
Edna M. Thornton confirmed that all mayoral and council candidates except John W. Wagner registered by the Dec 31 deadline for the February primary. Wagner registered January 1, six days past the deadline, making him ineligible to vote but still eligible to run for council per the city charter.
