Appointee and long time businessman Nelson began as Safeway manager in Phaanx, opened own grocery in 1938, ran Camelback Patty Yard, joined Associated Grocers, served on Madison District School board and Kiwanis clubs, built Nelson Shopping Center in Sedona, opened Nelson's Sedona Ranch Market, later sold to Babbitt Brothers and Fairway Foods in 1968 and 1970.

In 1968 Nelson sold much of the Sedona shopping center to George Mayhew while keeping the upper end housing his office. He helped organize the Sedona Masonic Club, Rotary Club of Sedona, the Sedona-Oak Creek Canyon Chamber of Commerce, and the Sedona Park board. He led the Easter Sunrise Service, aided hospital and church boards, and supported Boy Scouts and regional development through multiple civic roles.
