Cause of Fire Still Mystery at Pine Cliff Village

Police and fire investigators probe possible causes after the Dec 29 blaze at Pine Cliff Village saree complex that claimed a former Coconing High School athlete. Fire Chief Don Vorhies rechecked the scene to test if a bulging door and an altered bathroom light could cause rapid ignition. Detective Gary Joon said time element questions linger as the 3 am fire is reexamined for clues.

Massive hotel siege ends as snipers remain barricaded

In New Orleans a large police cordon surrounded the Downtown Howard Johnson Hotel after two surviving snipers began a fire fueled attack from the roof. Seven were killed and 17 injured before dawn as Marines used helicopter fire and surveillance to pressure the snipers. The building was evacuated and streets remained closed with authorities seeking federal help and no motive publicly released.

Accidental Bombing Hits Da Nang Air Base

An American flight leader mistakenly led five fighter bombers into an accidental attack on Da Nang Air Base. Ten Americans and one Vietnamese were wounded by shrapnel while fleeing. No deaths reported. The raid damaged AC-130 gunships and a helicopter was lightly damaged. four fuel tanks were destroyed. The planes came from bases in Thailand and a carrier off the coast.

Council to Hear Appeal Over Building Permit Denial

Flagstaff council will again consider Concrete Materials Corp's appeal of a denied conditional use permit for a 2400 square foot maintenance shop in a non conforming zone. The issue arose after the site was found to be about half built without a proper permit, leading to a planning commission denial and referral back for study.

Damascus says three planes were lost and claims Syrian forces shot down two Israeli jets, while artillery clashes raged along the border and in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights.

Snow Pack Promises Strong Water Supply in 1973

Snow depths reach 18 to 24 inches in Rim country with five to six inches of water, White Mountains 60 to 30 inches, and runoff five times above average. Salt Verde Fonton total 958000 acre feet, plus 545020 acre feet expected Jan–May. Reservoirs hold above normal water. periodic releases from Horseshoe and Dartlett on Verde continue. Page Plant Hiring Chief Is Appointed

Paul Winter named personnel supervisor for the 601 million Navajo Generating Station under construction near Page. The Salt River Project official announced Winter, 43, previously plant manager at Vostron Industries in Page and Santa Ana. He hails from Oblong Illinois, is an Air Force veteran, and a Fullerton Junior College graduate. He and wife Karen have two children, Susan and Scott. Also joining is Dorothy Hay, personnel specialist, to recruit and manage hiring. Hay, Berkeley native with law and securities background, is married to John and has children Thomas and Patricia.
