California asks the Supreme Court to reverse a proposed decision by the tribunal’s special master in the Arizona California water dispute. Attorney General Staley Mosk says the suggested decree would wipe out the entire Colorado River aqueduct system built by the Metropolitan Water District at a cost exceeding a half billion dollars.
In dense fog near Woerden Netherlands two passenger trains collided killing 87 people, the worst rail disaster in the country. Early reports said 0 injured, but ambulances carried hundreds. rescue workers and volunteers aided amid flames and debris.
Pleasant temperatures in Flagstaff and the Northland produced a beautiful weekend. Paul Sorenson of the Flagstaff Weather Bureau said the high yesterday reached 53 degrees, ten below the record. At 10 p.m. the airport read 51 and rising, with today’s record 61 set in 1921. Weather is expected to stay balmy for two to three more days.
Indonesian president Sukarno avoided injury when a bomb exploded near his motorcade in Makassar during a four day Celebes tour to rally support for West New Guinea seizure plans. Three killed and 25 injured in the crowd. Sukarno later inspected a military base as security tightened and he criticized Dutch policy and a magazine interview by Foreign Minister Luns.
Moscow reports Foreign Office news that V. M. Molotov, once denounced as a Stalinist, is reassigned to a peace role in Vienna as speculation grows that he may avoid expulsion from the party. The move follows his recall from the Soviet delegation to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Dover England reports a midnight collision in the foggy Channel sank the Yugoslav freighter Sabac. 28 Yugoslav seamen feared lost. Five survivors and one body recovered. 11 crewmen missing from the 2811 ton Yugoslav freighter. The Dorington Court British steamer was involved.
AP reports the second regular session of Arizona's 75th Legislature opens with Gov. Fannin to unveil his program in a joint session. The 40 day session targets tax equalization and welfare reform to ease homeowner costs, with 500 bills already filed and a push for equal property assessments.
A secret rightist underground army strike paralyzed Algiers and Oran for two hours, drawing crowds in the two largest Algerian cities. European supporters of independence rallied elsewhere as heavy security and helicopters watched. Shops closed, looting and rioting feared, then traffic and business resumed by noon.
President Kennedy meets with Republican and Democratic leaders in a two hour White House conference to discuss international affairs. He urged public welfare reform, pollution control, a home guard, fallout shelter standards, absentee voting changes, and a strong traffic safety program while warning lawmakers to tighten state spending and align civil defense with federal plans.
An AP report from Istanbul says a Pelgian Sabena jet with 27 aboard was forced by Soviet jets to land at Yerevan near the Soviet Turkish frontier after claiming it was pursued. Sabena officials and Walter Devros described a forced land or escort to Yerevan with plans to reach Istanbul after repairs. All personnel were reported safe.
The government plans release a second handbook on nuclear weapons effects in April. The volume covers blast, heat, radiation, and fallout and has been in preparation for about four years.
