The Arizona DES reports district wide unemployment rose slightly in November 1976 with Apache Coconino Navajo and Yavapai counties seeing modest increases. Seasonal losses in trade and construction plus hotel motel cutbacks contributed while gains in transportation and public education eased the impact. The labor force totaled 19,100 with 1,200 unemployed.
An Arizona State Prison guard held by four maximum security inmates during a Thursday escape was found unharmed in an east Tucson apartment with a young couple who were also hostages. Police said the victims reported no physical mistreatment and investigators questioned guard John W. Smith as officers searched for inmates Paul Jorgenson Richard Benfield Michael Clary and John Lamb, who fled in the couple’s car and another vehicle.

PHOENIX AP State Corrections Director John Moran calls a written claim by slain inmate Tony Serra that Moran and Warden Harold Cardwell visited him in his cell an absolute lie Serra, 42, was stabbed and beaten to death Monday at the Arizona State Prison. Evidence will be presented to a Pinal County grand jury Tuesday. Cardwell and Moran recall a brief encounter in a cellblock during a routine tour and deny visiting Serra in his cell, though Serra says they spoke about a possible move to a halfway house.
