Flagstaff readers learn state Senate president elect Jacquin urged a fourth campus in Maricopa County to serve Arizona state universities and a new college. He indicated centralized government goals, a cabinet level finance department, and voter age changes in upcoming elections.
Tucson AP reports Johnny Cash planned to tape eight songs for the Apollo 14 crew. The one hour TV special will air as the mission lifts off later this month. Cash recorded the songs with the understanding they would be played during the Apollo one day.
AEDENIN AP reports Phelps Dodge received a one year conditional permit to operate its copper smelters at Morenci Douglas and Ajo. The State Air Pollution Central Hearing Board ordered faster completion of work to meet a three year compliance limit and will revisit plans and progress each year.
New York stocks posted a small broad-based advance in early trading as a rate reduction to 6 percent from 6.74 percent boosted confidence. The Dow Jones industrial average stood at 839.61 at noon, up 1.64 points by midafternoon amid bank sector optimism.
MCPHERSON Ga AF selection of a six officer court martial panel for My Lai defendant Set Charles Hutto was completed today as the Army readies its case. Hutto 22 of Tallulah La is accused of assault with intent to murder at least six civilians during the My Lai assault on March 16 1968.

Two youths James Parle and Dana Merkel were ordered to appear at a January 18 preliminary hearing on charges of shooting to death Phoenix officer Albert Bluhm, after extradition from Colorado. Parle waived extradition in Cortez, Merkel did so in Phoenix, following a high speed chase that started with an abduction and a camper-truck shooting.
Officials note the zoning measure lacks enabling statewide legislation and anticipate strong opposition from Morrall and others at upcoming hearings. Larkey says the Flagstaff League of Women Voters will back the beauty commission, while some citizens fear individual harm. McIlonald credits citizen input for key provisions, emphasizing the ordinance will not hurt anyone and urging collaborative problem solving with affected residents.
Mrs Anne Beeler 68 passed away on Wednesday night in Flagstaff after eight months there while residing with her daughter and son in law Dr and Mrs David D Smith. Born June 20 1902 in Maple Valley Washington she leaves daughter and son Scott Beeler Renton Washington. Interment and services will be in Portland Oregon.
Sedona forecast calls for fair skies then increasing clouds with very cold nights and rising by Friday. Flagstaff and northern Arizona: fair with continued cold and increasing winds through Friday. Winslow area: fair and very cold through Friday with low around 4 and high near 20. Snow showers possible in mountains Saturday, diminishing by Sunday. Lake Powell remains generally fair with highs in the 20s and nights around 10 to 13. Admissions and discharges listed for Wednesday January 6.

Sadie Montoya died at Flagstaff Community Hospital on January 3. A Requiem Mass will be held at Madre de Dios Church and a funeral service at Scott Chapel in Winslow, with burial in Desert View Cemetery. She was born in New Mexico and moved to Winslow in 1988, survived by husband Frank T. and children Fred Rudy Michael Patsy Katy Darlene and Annie, three grandchildren and two sisters Princes Reyes and Nick Silva. Funeral arrangements handled by Statt Mortuary.
