Clemente Missing in Plane Crash While On Relief Mission

Roberto Clemente headlined Puerto Rico relief efforts for Nicaragua earthquake survivors. A cargo plane carrying Clemente and four others crashed into the Atlantic after takeoff from San Juan. First Baby of 1973 Born to Montoya Family

The Montoya family welcomes the first baby of 1973, a five pound eleven ounce girl born at 12 30 a m New Year s Day at Flagstaff Community Hospital. The newborn, unnamed, is the fourth daughter in the Montoya line and will receive presents from 27 Flagstaff firms allied with the Daily Sun in sponsoring the ahadal contest. Both mother and infant are reported doing fine.

Mrs Richard Nixon and actor John Wayne headlined the fourth Rose Parade cast in Pasadena California. The event drew about one million people and an estimated television audience of 300 million worldwide.

Fire Sweeps Ash Fork Elementary School

A weekend fire damaged Ash Fork Elementary School about midnight Saturday, caused by an electrical short. The 60 year old building suffered about 50000 dollars in damage. 96 students will attend classes at the nearby high school when term resumes after the holiday break.

City Officials Meet After Pine Cliff Village Fire

Sunday appeals from Flagstaff churches urged food and clothing aid for Pine Cliff Village fire survivors. Saturday top city officials convened to discuss relief efforts after the blaze at the 26 unit complex on Switzer Mesa. Rick Mauk of Barstow California, 18, a former athlete at Coonainough School, died in the incident.

Explosion Ruled Out After Ball Room Collapse

In Phoenix an New Year celebration at Emma's Ballroom saw a ceiling collapse injuring 60 to 70 people, four seriously. Police said most injuries were minor. none fatalities reported.
