Mark Smith Sr Dies at 71 in Williams Native

Mark Smith Sr 71 a lifelong Williams resident died at 9 p m Thursday after a month long illness He was born December 19 1889 in Williams son of Thomas and unnamed Williams settlers He worked as a butcher at Babybitt s and later as a school custodian He and his wife ran the Lone Star Shop He was an Odd Fellows member for 43 years and had ties to Knights of Pythias Surviving are his wife Katharine two sons Mark Jr and Robert both of Williams three daughters Mildred Augenstein and Mrs Pitts of Williams and Katherine Salem of Riverside California three brothers Marion Oric of Los Angeles Willard H of Mishawaka and an unnamed sister Mildred Sullivant of Corona California one granddaughter and six great grandchildren.

Northern Arizona seniors win University scholarships at UA

Six Northern Arizona high school seniors received Christmas gifts from the University of Arizona. They are notified for the 1961-62 academic year. one Bail scholarship and five general resident scholarships were awarded. Barbara Wayne Dillon Holbrook won one of 14 Baird scholarships valued at 250 dollars. Recipients of general resident scholarships include Oran Tore Brown Playstatts James Russell Clark Jr Williams Charity Lee Davis Fon David Day and Goyry C Robb, all of Winslow.

Winslow RR Man Retires Dec 31

Specialy John W Ballantyne of Winslow on the Santa Fe Railway passenger train cand ar will retire December 31 closing a railroad career that began July 26, 1924. A Payson Utah native Ballantyne entered service as brakeman on the Valley Division then transferred to the Albuquerque Division in 1925 and was promoted to conductor December 16, 1938. He resides at 708 West Cherry Shel Winslow.

Survivors Search For Missing After Tanker Sinking

Nine survivors among a crew of 37 aboard the Americ Pine Ridge were rescued or recovered as Coast Guard ships and salvage crews continued the hunt for eight missing sailors. Capt. Clark Snydety, 44, is among those listed as missing. engineers and crew from Vial Fane and Key Lines aided by helicopters from the carrier Valley Forge worked to salvage the hulk 100 miles off Cape Hatteras. The Pine Ridge broke apart in gale winds. salvage efforts shifted to recovering the remaining crew and securing salvage rights for the owner.

Banks Release Frozen Funds for Yule Teachers in New Orleans

Four New Orleans banks released long frozen school money following a U S District Court order. The funds will pay teachers at two integrated schools before Christmas and cover 34 administrative, supervisory, and clerical staff unpaid by the state. About a million dollars will allow paying vendors and contractors for ongoing renovation work. The court also ordered release of 728000 in board funds and 280000 in taxes held in escrow.
