Seismic Gear Detects Minor Quakes at Sunset Crater Park

Sunset Crater Park visitors observed three minor quakes since Sept 6 1970 and Nov 4 1970 with Aug 13 1971 latest tremor. Park Ranger Magee notes the seismograph, donated by USGS and installed here as exhibit, records vibrations though magnitude not scaled. He adds a fault line runs through the park and future eruptions remain possible within the next two centuries.

Aftermath of Shooting at Toonerville Restaurant

Sheriff deputy Ray Stock takes statements from Mr and Mrs Charles Gray amid a scene outside the Toonerville restaurant. Mrs Gray flags an upside down Closed sign while Mr Gray notes a lighted beer sign would not be on if the place were closed. Deputies find burgers still cooking on the grill as investigators arrive. Miss Randall Thompson 19 of Twin Arrows comforts Mrs Gray as investigators question them. A blood stained pillow remains under the head of wounded Mrs McAlister. The injured woman had collapsed calling Mrs Gray from a nearby wall phone.

Murder continues from page 11 at Flagstaff roadstop

Mr Gray alerted the Department of Public Safety in Flagstaff before hurrying to Toonerville. The McAlisters operated a small roadstop for about 18 years near US 66 and US 40 with a unique liquor license attracting locals. Reports of threats and fights had long accompanied McAlister who reportedly carried a pistol in the belt in earlier years.

Health officials settle stand inspection dispute at Courthouse

County Health Director William Thomas and County Attorney Michael Flournoy settled a conflict over a Courthouse lobby food stand inspection. Steve and Mrs. Casaus operate the stand and will comply with state and county regulations while both agencies assist in meeting them. A prior audit had caused a brief closure and prompted a rapid inquiry and letter, with plans to address the issue at the Board of Supervisors meeting on September 7.

Markets Fall as Profit Taking Saddles New York Stocks

NYSE traders showed more declines than advances, while reports list numerous tickers and price quotes, including AT&T, Gen Elec, Ford, DuPont, Remain names, and varied percentages, reflecting persistent selling pressure amid a slow session.
